As the title implies, song lyrics that particularly made you feel something

Lots of good of Montreal songs, this one most recently

"I spend my waking hours haunting my life
I made the one I love start crying tonight
And it felt good
Still there must be a more elegant solution"

What about you guys?

Father of mine, by Everclear.

Father of mine
Tell me where have you been?
You know I just closed by eyes
My whole world disappeared
Father of mine
Take me back to the day
Yeah, when I was still your golden boy
Back before you went away
I remember blue skies walking the block
I loved it when you held me high
I loved to hear you talk
You would take me to the movie
You would take me to the beach
You would take me to a place inside
That's so hard to reach
Oh!
Father of mine
Tell me where did you go?
Yeah, you had the world inside your hand
But you did not seem to know
Father of mine
Tell me what do you see?
When you look back at your wasted life
And you don't see me
I was ten years old
Doin' all that I could
It wasn't easy for me to be a scared white boy
In a black neighborhood
Sometimes you would send me a birthday card
With a five dollar bill
I never understood you then
And I guess I never will
Daddy gave me a name
My daddy gave me a name
(Then he walked away)
Daddy gave me a name
(Then he walked away)
My daddy gave me a name
Oh yeah
Yeah
Daddy gave me a name
Daddy gave me a name
(Then he walked away)
Daddy gave me a name
(Then he walked away)
My daddy gave me a name
Yeah
Yeah
Oh yeah
Father of mine
Tell me where have you been?
Yeah, I just closed by eyes
And the world disappeared
Father of mine
Tell me how do you sleep?
With the children you abandoned
And the wife I saw you beat
I will never be safe
I will never be sane
I will always be weird inside
I will always be lame
Now I'm a grown man
With a child of my own
And I swear, I'll never let her know
All the pain I have known
Daddy gave me a name
(Then he walked away)
My daddy gave me a name
(Then he walked away)
My daddy gave me a name
(Then he walked away)
My daddy gave me a name
Yeah
(Then he walked away)
Yeah
(Then he walked away)
Oh yeah

When I first heard the song, I didn’t give 2 fks about it. I never used to listen to lyrics anyhow. Now that I’m a father, and I started listening to lyrics, I understand the struggle and complexity of the lyrics. This is a good example of excellent storytelling, though I’m sure this is someone’s real story, that paints a very clear picture of the scenario.

If you’ve never heard it here it is.

Well there is one song that makes me cry every time I hear it. It's a song by Rachid Taha about a real life woman called Jamila who was from Algeria and she was tortured by her own family for refusing to take part in an arranged marriage.

This is a story
Some kind of a story from old times
This story
Happened one day
Jamila, there are, there are lot
Of (girls) whose lives end up in graves

She was living her life
With its joy and its dreams

But one day
Her father came forcing her to get married

Without asking for her opinion

She was caught up in the chaos
They slammed the doors in her face

Nobody lent a helping hand to her
Neither her brother nor her mother

Her name was Jamila

Jamila couldn't do anything about it
Jamila took her own life
Because of her misfortune
Because of her misfortune

There are lot of girls like Jamila
Whose lives end up in graves

They used to call her Jamila
There are lot of (girls) whose lives end up in graves
Houria, Fatima, Kheïra, and Aïcha...

That's what Rachid Taha did with songs. He took serious issues and made them into powerful yet upbeat songs.

You should check out Voila Voila it's about racism in France. It's part in French and part in English. (Also has Eric Cantona singing) Absolute awesome rock song.

Here is the French parts of the song translated terribly by me lol.

Here it is, it starts again
Racism everywhere, everywhere and even in our sweet France

Here it is, it starts again
Everywhere, everywhere, they advance
The lesson was not enough
I must say that in memory we chose forgetting
Everywhere, everywhere, the speeches are the same
Stranger, you are the cause of our problems
Me, I thought it was over
But no, but no, it was only a respite
There you go ...
The lesson was not enough
Must say that in memory we chose forgetting
Out, out, strangers
It is the remedy of civilized men
Take care, they thrive
While we look elsewhere
Take care, they thrive
While we look elsewhere
There you go ...

That's awesome! Gonna be singing that hook all day, quite a 90s indie vibe going on too and you had me with King Eric!

This composer/song writer/singer got me through some trying times in my life. Especially when I found out he was like me. This is just one of the songs that quelled me.

It's a little bit funny
This feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money, but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live
If I was a sculptor, ha
But then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a traveling show
I know it's not much, but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song, and this one's for you
And you can tell everybody
This is your song
It may be quite simple, but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind
That I put down in the words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world
I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses, well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind
While I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on
So excuse me forgetting
But these things I do
You see I've forgotten, if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is, what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen
And you can tell everybody
This is the song
It may be quite simple, but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind
That I put down in the words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind
That I put down in the words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

Songwriters: Elton John, Bernie Taupin.

Modest Mouse - Little Motel. The lyrics are powerful story of two people who cannot stand each other but also cannot stand to be apart. Then you add the contents of the music video, and I promise you will be cutting onions hard.

Death Cab for Cutie - Grapevine Fires. A good jam about a family making the best of a dangerous situation. The music video is animated really well and adds some impact to the song.

Daft Punk - Around the World. Around the world. Around the world. Around the world around the world. Around the world around the world.

My favorite thing about music, is how it makes you feel. Not just the lyrics, but the music.

I actually got goosebumps when I would hear the guitar solo in Weezer’s “Buddy Holly”. I don’t listen to lyrics as much, as I usually feel the beat or flow of a song. As I’ve gotten older and have a family, I have started to listen to the words more.

If you want to go that way, then: Jimmy Page's guitar solo in "Stairway to Heaven"

Another amazing song by Rachid Taha that gets me in the feels is his song called Wesh N'amal (What to Do) He wrote it a few weeks after his wife left him and he was deciding if he should kill himself or not. Once again I will badly translate it for yall lol.

Every day
Each day I watch the days
Every night
I wait for the nights
Every night I wait for a sign
Every morning
I ask a question
How does the world work
What kind of world are we living in
What to do, what's been done
She's forgotten me, forgotten me
What to do, what do I do
She's gone, abandoned me
My heart remains pure
And yet she has abandoned me

Who am I?
Am I bad
Am I different
Am I Arab
Am I European
Am I Indian
Am I black

What to do, what has been accomplished
She has gone and abandoned me
What can I do, what's been done
My heart has stayed pure
But, but
I've got to get it over with
This is a tough day
I've never had one like it
In all my life...
This day is a day on strike
What to do, what do I do
Life has forsaken me
Although my heart remains pure
She has forgotten me, abandoned me...
What to do, what could I do
I drift with the stars
What to do, what do I do
I travel with my beloved...

Getting ready for the reason of the season.

Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance, but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby, do you recognize me?
Well, it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me
Happy Christmas, I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I love you", I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now, I know you'd fool me again
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
Ooh
Oh, oh, baby
A crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you and your soul of ice
My God, I thought you were someone to rely on
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover, but you tore me apart
Oh, oh now I've found a real love
You'll never fool me again
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special, special
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
Special
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart (I gave you mine)
A man under cover but you tore him apart
Maybe next year I'll give it to someone
I'll give it to someone special
Special
So long
