Can it change all the text?
Because if it can, seems like one could basically just copy and paste from the faqs floating around - and my understanding was that some game text could be changed (or there wouldn't be partial patches) but not all of it.

EDIT: Obviously I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here and assuming that's not a Photoshop - which is the very least I can do.

I totally agree with you KiC.But at your level you can do pretty much everything and the 3,2mb of text located on SRT:W is bigger than any game I've ever seen.

could've been a bit better, but i don't have the right font.

that's just to prove your arguments where wrong.

but seeing your references i have no doubt that you can easily put different text in a game.

most people around here however have very little programming/hacking skills and can't hope to do more than to use existing romhacking tools to rewrite plain texts, or edit some images.

yes for you writing some tools to add new text to a game might be easy, but for a lot. it isn't.

I never said it was easy. In fact, it is quite a difficult task at times, and SRWW's compression was quite advanced. It took several hours of reverse engineering to figure out every neccessary bit. I wouldn't be able to write a recompressor, though. Therefore I just replaced it with huffman, it's more efficient on english text anyway.

However. It might not be an easy task, but it IS a lot easier than translating all that text. Do you know how much text 3,2mb is? Over 4900 pages at size 10. Over 4900 pages of endless japanese. That is freaking lot, and it takes forever just to read through it. Not to mention all the references, possible slang, and maybe even some text you've never seen in the game before.

This is why I think it is a lot easier to reverse engineer and reprogram it than to translate it.

yeah I know how much 3,2mb of text is, not to mention other SRW games that have a massive amount of 6+ mb of text. But rarely games have that much text.

Gotta love a challenge.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Nadesico/PoD and Full Metal Panic!/Fumoffu, and have Tekkaman Blade and GaoGaiGar lined up ready to watch.

could you at least then make an effort to insert just the names/skills/menu's/stats stuff, none of the dialog text? Even just that would be crazy awesome.

reizo he's already busy with his other projects. He also said that maybe he'll pick up the game after he's finished with his other projects, so you should just be grateful about that.

Who says im not grateful? I've been playing srw games since whenever, untranslated. I know how the menu's and such work, but it would still be nice to have them actually translated.
Also where did he say he would pick anything up? I must have read over that then.

If I decide to work on SRWW, then it's everything or it's nothing. The one who may translate it is currently working on another game.
I won't release a partial patch, simply because it wouldn't work. There were substantial modifications to the game's core routines, which just results in lots of crashes on untranslated mission and battle text.

Oh, and just so you know: hacking a game's menus is the most time consuming hacking job if you want to do it right.
