I heard that using a non-powered HD (like just usb) can burn out the usb port - does this apply for the dock as well? or is it high powered enough where it doesn't matter?
I am just completing my xci collection and was considering buying a big HDD online, but not sure which to get. Leaning towards one that is self-powered.

Wait, playing from an external USB drive is possible now?

Edit: Ah, it's only through SX OS. I was hoping for support from homebrew.

Unless you are using it when docked (I hope) I would strongly recommend using a SSD solid state drive as it is not susceptible to damage from vibration.

The 3.0 port on the dock will power up to 1Amp, enough for any 2.5" USB harddrive. I myself prefer a USB 3.0 mSATA drive. Fast as hell, cheap SSDs, and no moving parts.

Size, speed, native USBC, and the fact that I have several laying around...

Yeah I'll stick to the sammy portable ssd vs the sata to usb bridge and full sized ssd.

Wasn't really worried about the cost. :)

To each their own!

I use a 2tb mini portable toshiba stuck on the back of my nsw plate with professional Velcro tape connected with a mini Nonda type c to usb for a while now works a treat especially when you want to convert a quick game from xci to nsp for convenience, it works really well. If I want to hide the cable I can push it under the drive/back plate and it won’t fall out, it sits there nicely.

I have a question about using a hard drive with the Switch.
Just curious, do I need to "Power Down" the Switch every time I unplug the hard drive from the Switch to add a new game to it?

Thanks

No. Every time you enter the album app (SX Loader), folders and attached drives are scanned again. If you're worried about any corruption or whatnot, put the Switch to sleep before pulling the drive.
