Does "bricked" mean as in the one that came in my New Nintendo 3DS XL and was already modified when I got it, and then it stopped working for no apparent reason?

"Bricked" means an electronic device failed and now has all the electronic use of a brick or a paperweight.

This can have software reasons (softbrick like damaged firmware, corrupted files…) or hardware reasons (hardbrick like over-voltage, broken connectors… )

Whatever is the problem with your N3DSXL: Post a new thread with a good description and a meaningful title in the best fitting subsection in 3DS forum:

If you got it in the mail and it straight up doesn't work then the better term is dead on arrival, soft-bricked typically you can fix it, as for like hard bricked like apply wrong voltage to the 3DS, MCU brick etc then you have a permanent brick. If you bought a CFW modded 3DS, then it stop working you could classified it as broken, or bricked depending what you did, like if you shut off the unit while it updating it count as soft bricked, in the case of a hard brick if you have a hard modded 3DS and you apply voltage to the usb port then it is hard bricked.

like explained already, it is data corruption not bricked, if it was bricked it won't operate in normal mean, like if the 3DS got software bricked, prior to NTRbootHax you need a NAND backup, and hard mod to fix it, in term of hard brick, like apply voltage to data port on hard modded 3DS, MCU brick etc, meaning the system is totally unfixable even using NTRboothax.

The Wii U example is another good example of brick, if you have CBHC installed, and you removed the account that is associated with the purchase of the game used for the exploit you get a brick, only way to get out of that loop is hard modding the unit and having a NAND backup prior to brick.

In your case it doesn't sound like file corruption, if you plug the SD into the computer and the computer said there is a file corruption, and want to scan to fix it, typically bad/cheap SD can lead to file corruption.

You should know people reading this question thread know nothing about your discord post in 2018, like I like if you expect a satisfying answer, try to explain your issue more, if they told you to use NTRBooxhax to fix your unit that requires a DS flash cart.
