So Im on 5.4(going to update to 6.6 to be safe) but what would have happened if I updated my n3ds without updating luma first?

You will be met with a black screen until you updated to 6.6
I think a9lh gets removed or u brick
It won't remove A9LH, the FIRM0/1 protection is still in place and will prevent that.

SO it wouldnt have bricked?I am now on 6.6 is it safe to update?
It won't brick. So long as your CFW still has FIRM0/1 protection, you are always safe to update.
But it would result in a black screen due to the older reboot code.
So now that you are on 6.6, it's safe to update.

ah, okay, thats why i said or it will brick :P, but seeing your rank I guess i will have to shut up now
It does appear like a brick, but it's not. 11.3 broke the older reboot codes. How? I actually don't know. I just know it does.
