I soft modded my wii months ago and I had:
Wii version 3.2
Preloader
Homebrew channel


What had changed in the last few months? I am looking to play gamecube games and update my wii to the latest version, how would I go about doing that? Is there a reason to update to 4.1u?

bootmii enables you to make a backup of your nand so if you brick you can restore your wii to a previous working state

then install cmios rev3 and use gamecube backup launcher 0.2

now there is nand emulation on sd/usb, that's pretty cool
it lets you run vc/wiiware from it

Some questions:
Is that faster than launching from the SD card?
Will I gain a speed boost if I upgrade to 4.0?
Is CIOSCROP 3.0 fully compatible with 3.2u?

I read a few months ago that my wii can only run .dol files, not .elf files. Is that true?

it runs directly from sd/usb, so no copying to the wii nand first like system menu 4.0/4.1 does
i don't know if it's faster than running from wii nand itself, i haven't tested games that do a lot of loading yet. I think Monkey Island would be good game to test that, it has long loading times.
