The makers of Wall-E said they've watched Short Circuit before and the design of Johnny 5 may have affected them subcontiously while designing Wall-E.

The concept is quite similar, using lens (or binoculars) to see far, tread for all-terrain access. Just Wall-E can hide into a box, and can take a trash dump from its belly.
