I will be doing a fresh format and install of SP1 soon but IMO the OS still has problems. If Quad Core was supported properly for XP I'd Downgrade in a heartbeat.

If you don't want to play games then just install a linux distro like ubuntu.

You can test ubuntu before installing by using the live cd and to make the installation even easier you can install ubuntu from windows as if it was a program.

I personally use both Vista and Windows, on different machines. I found that Vista is XP with more "features" included, and a nicer theme. If your computer can afford to run it, then get it.

When did Vista get booted out of the "Windows" category, lol.

Personally I've had more hell on XP than Vista. Way more hell. What bugs have you gotten? What specs do you have? I haven't had ANY trouble transferring any files. Tried checking task manager and seeing if your AV is interfering with the transfer (it happens on my XP with McAfee with almost any file over 5MB)? And your work drive not showing could either be a problem with a cable or the hard drive itself being dead-ish.

Other pros of Vista is the uber friendly interface, good looks and apps can run better (something to do with resource management being much better than XP).

To Lisa, what are your specs? If you have a nVidia graphics card, I don't really recommend getting Vista cos the drivers are so abysmal.

Sounds like it's time to get an external hard drive and do a dual boot with Vista. I've been a cheapo and just used the pirate XP version I've had for years.

Still, the main reason I want it is only because of DX10 support, though there's not much use for it right now tbh.

I suggest you stay away from Vista until at least Vista Service Pack 2 or 3. In its current state, its broken. There is many bug bugs and flaws in the system. You know that user prompt that occurs every time a program wants to do something that Microsoft said was an added security feature? Its just for show. Its only purpose is to annoying the user and give them a false sense of security. Its incredibly easy to write software for Vista that does whatever it wants, even reformat your hard drive if it so wanted.

Also if you want to play games or run alot of system intensive applications, stick with XP. Currently gameplay on Vista tends to be 5-10 FPS slower then on a comparable Windows XP system. Also if you like to listen to music and such, guess what? Microsoft made it so vista throttles your connection by 10% or more. So don't listen to music and download a bunch of stuff at the same time.

I could go on and on about all the problems Vista currently have, hence why I'm stay away from it until the OS matures a bit more. No wonder why Microsoft is basically brushing Vista aside while working on the next Windows OS, Windows Seven slated to launch late 2008/early 2009. Basicly making Vista a filler OS to get Microsoft some extra income while they work on a new OS. Sounds like Windows Me all over again. :/

Its true that UAC was designed to annoy the users, but this was not to "instill a false sense of security". They hoped the annoyance to the users would cause application developers to start writing applications that ran in user mode, as opposed to letting everything run with administrator privileges ala XP.

This is a problem Xp has, but to a much lower extent. This can easily fixed here:

I have yet to experience that issue in the least, I don't use winamp either.
Is it possible this only affects certain iterations of Vista?
As once again it's something that isn't affecting me at all. I have music playing 24/7 and speeds are always maxed.

If anyone had the chance to take either Shitsta or XP, I'm sure they would go for XP. Vista fails in every aspect except for visual appeal, XP wins in almost every aspect since you can also theme it more

Well are you an online gamer/ computer gamer?? then it's XP.
Especially if you are a korean gamer like me

you know how korea has/makes a lot of online games, such as:
Dekaron, Gunz, Special Force (US version: soldier front), Dual gate, Cabal online, Dungeon and Fighter, etc etc etc

Vista? all this security messages when you run games pop out, its slow keyboard input for some games.
Some games won't install/run at all, such as maplestory...

For XP, the start -> all program list is made easier to locate items,
while vista... you have to look for it through the whole list of ALL installed programs.

Vista appeals in visual aspect, but it seems very unstable. I had to do a system recover 3 times by now,

1. because of IE
It says that addons are disabled, even though all addons are checked.. so flash in web browsers didn't work... (with the red X on each flash picture)
and I hate firefox, because some pages won't load properly, some part of the sites are messed up...
and opera just doesn't suit me as well as IE,
so to get my IE back, i had to do a system recovery

2. It just popped out that the trail version of vista ended
(even though I paid for it, and bought the computer with vista already on it)
The whole computer would be stuck at the start screen, telling me to re install vista or something like that,
but some guy came to fix it, did a system recovery, and now it works

3. frequent "system failure"
(blue screen, with white text it says something like system failure etc)


Its aero style (the visual theme) is really nice visually, but it slows down dragging stuff around.

But just to tell you right now, If you are used to using XP, do not change to vista, because many things are hard to locate when you first see your desktop screen.

...for the conclusion, the main reason why i hate vista is the lack of compatibility of many programs/games, and its annoying security message that pops up everytime i want to do something.

if you want to really change to vista, just hope all games for XP get vista compatibility patches... such as devil may cry 3 SE patch...

or just get the vista transformation pack for XP, so your XP just "looks" like vista

I have been using vista for the past year now. and i do have troubles every now and then when it comes to the internet, as all my browsers will shutdown and not connect to the internet even though i have a full connection. but that can be my fault as i vlite my vista to get rid of things i dont need like tablet pc and sample video and music and that can lead to problems.

but other than that i have not have any other problems. i can install and play games on vista just as well as i did on XP. i have to admit that vista is very XPish, but they have add more features to make it more smooth running. the search in vista is better than that of XP.
