if it says it fails to save, it means it couldn't write to the config file.
You need to check why it can't write to it : SD card is protected?
sorry i forgot to tell that i only use usb because my sd port doesn't work so i use two one for the iso's and one for homebrew apps and stuff.

Maybe it didn't detect the USB at the first initialization of the loader, so the setting paths are all set to "usb8:/"
verify the path in the settings>user paths>
if you see any "usb8:/" it means it couldn't init the USB correctly at launch and couldn't decide where to create the config file, or maybe you switched the drive while inside the loader?

Do not remove/reinsert/switch the USB while inside the loader too ! it will cause issues and can be a hard drive corruption cause.

It doesn't say "device not inserted" when you go to the user path menu, does it?

when you load the User path menu, you have a list of path on the screen
what are the paths device?
usually it's sd:/ or usb1:/

Or maybe the SD card need to works for the loader to work correctly.

same problem... same solution :

First the SD
Use an SD card ! (SD or SDHC. NO SDXC!)
YES USE SD CARD, DON'T USE WII WITH USB ONLY. HOMEBREW ON SD, ALWAYS !
be sure it's not write protected
be sure it's FAT32 and not exFAT

then the USB
If USB is not detected at init stage, be sure you plugged in correct USB Port !
Use updated softmod (modmii, not pumpmywii)
is USB still not detected, be sure you use r1272, set IOS58 in loader's IOS, or reset the settings
use another USB HDD

Yes, I said HDD !
FLASHDRIVES ARE NOT WORKING ON WII !
Stop trying to want to use flashdrives, usbkeys, usb sticks, etc. THEY ARE NOT WORKING.
USE EXTERNAL HDD ONLY
