Hacking updating sysnand?

I have 4.2 installed right now on my o3ds xl.
I'd like to update to something higher.

If I remove my SD card, then boot into sysnand, can I use a *.3ds game to update my sysnand?
Any *.3DS games that get me to 9.2?

No, you'll brick your 3DS by trying that. You can safely get to 4.5 like that though, but you probably want higher than that.

How do I legitimately get to something higher than 4.5 without bricking? Why would updating my sysnand brick it?

You can't update sysnand from a rom higher than 6.x. You can update it from an actual game cart or sky, but make sure you have an exploitable browser installed first.

You can restore it from the gateway menu!

I just see a "backup system nand" option in the GW menu. What option do I choose for restore?

Go ahead and GW restore your 8.1 as long as you're double certain it really is 8.1.

Edit: Press UP on D-pad while selecting downgrade. Make sure NAND.BIN is on your big sdmc root.

Well it's definitely lower than 9.2
It was in the 8's.

To install anything your need gateway in hack mode. (gateway mode.)

and I was wrong. It was in the 6's.
I'm at 6.2 now though. So I guess that's closer to my end goal. ^.^

I have an N3DS with Emunand for my main gaming sessions. basically turning my O3DS into a sysnand machine to play clean cias. (I'm bored. I find tinkering more fun than the games themselves.)

So I'm at 6.2 sysnand.
I removed the SD. deleted the 1gb emunand partition.
Formatted the full 4gb stick as a fat32 32byte.
I turn my 03DS on. I boot to GW menu.
I click gateway mode.
and then it's black screen. Nothing happening.

I must be missing something? I thought gateway mode works in sysnand?

To clarify. N3DS is fine... booting into Emunand.

Still haven't gotten my O3DS to boot into GW Mode sysnand.
Formatting Emunand on the 6.1 machine to make sure I'm not crazy.

Boots into Emunand fine but the second I use a clean SD card it won't boot into GW Mode with Sysnand.
Using Launcher 3.1.1

Is there an older launcher I should be using?
