Sorry if it's already implemented, but could you please make it possible to switch the game screen to Ds's bottom display? I'm asking because my upper screen displays red noise for some reason, and people say it needs to be replaced for which I don't have money. And also for me it just feels better to play games on the bottom screen, it's so like in the days of GBA.

Thank you for keeping nesDS alive and making it better, huiminghao!
This can be easily done and a short-cut is needed.... If I did that, I will tell you.

Oh, thank you. It'll be so great to play NES games in a way they are meant to be played once again!

So the sound is as good as it's going to get for a while? If so, then I will go ahead and update unless you are planning a new version with either better sound or other major improvements (other than FDS stuff) soon.
Hold off til the next release, an update was made to the SVN today labeled as improved sound.

It didn't occur at all before 0.47a when loading through official plugin menu.

Also, isn't plugin menu supposed to be better for loading homebrew?
When asking for help on running IRCDS, people told me "load it through plugin menu, it has better compatibility" and stuff like that.Hmm...

I heard it the other way. Weren't there incompatibilities for some homebrew in the plugin menu before?
QUOTE(Pingouin7 @ Mar 31 2011, 08:18 PM) Oh, and have you gotten Super Mario Bros. 2 (FDS) to work properly?
If you're talking about the "Lost Levels" version of SMB2, then yes, I have it running fine.

Edit: Nevermind that.

One .fds file I found didn't have the FDS.......... part at the beginning. But for some reason, when I added it manually, it didn't work.
I found a clean dump of the file that already had the FDS.......... part already and it worked.

this is a dumb question but
what i need to run fds files in this emulator?

(grab the helm and the shield, and hide somewhere..)

You know what I'd like to see?

Multiple save state slots.

It'd be super handy for games like Excitebike and Battle City, so I could design AND save multiple levels.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for working on this emulator. I use it every day and it's one of my favourite things on the DS.

I'm having issues with folders taking really long to open. I have 800+ ROMs, and it takes more than a minute to load. It's too slow.

And are the occasional sound issues fixed in the newest SVN?

Although this isn't on the topic of the sound issues people are having, I need to mention again the lack of support for the FDS's additional audio hardware. I mentioned DPCM before, but I was incorrect. Super Mario 2 US uses DPCM sound to mimic the wavetable sound that was used in Doki Doki Panic.
Huiminghao, can you add support for FDS wavetable and FM synthesis? Thank you.
e... Tell me a way to hear the FDS's additional audio. When I was playing Zelda(fds) on virtuanes, there is no FDS sound at all.. I never played fds games before, so I'd think it is unnecessary to add the FDS sound.

Not sure exactly what exactly qualifies as "FDS Sounds", but I'm pretty sure that FCEUX plays all the extra sounds and channels. And it's opensource as well.

There is FDS sound on VirtuaNES. Compare what you hear on VirtuaNES to what you hear on nesDS, you will hear missing sounds.
On the title screen of Zelda, there is no FM sound, so the music doesn't sound right in nesDS. In Doki Doki Panic, many of the sound effects are missing (compare to Super Mario 2 US).

And yes, FCEUX is a better emulator.

I know that

I mean I don't know what sounds to 'look' for. Never really played FDS games other than Legend of Zelda, and that was on a PC emulator (FCEUX). Still haven't gotten any FDS games (other than Hao-kun no Fushigi na Tabi, which was horribly maimed and released as Mystery Quest) working on the DS in part because I don't have many.
Also, my MicroSD card reader broke and I don't have access to one that can read SDHC cards anymore.

that sucks. Maybe you can get what I'm using: a SanDisk MobileMate Micro adapter. I've had mine for 3+ years, and it hasn't failed me yet. (it looks a lot like the crappy M3 adapter, but don't worry: it's not)

On-topic: You can also try Doki Doki Panic, most sound effects don't play in nesDS because FDS sound isn't supported.

A bit of missing FDS audio I've noticed is the door sound in Metroid. The FDS version had a cool unique sound that is muted in NesDS.
Thanks again for the update. Really appreciate the time you spend toiling over the sound issues. As a user it can be hard to distinguish what's going wrong in the midst of an PCM heavy music track to cause that subtle crackle, but I've noticed in Kung Fu during the laughing cutscene (end of stage two), there's a clear "pop" as the laugh is initiated. Perhaps the noise can be diminished in that isolated incident, and overall sound would improve as a result. Easier said than done I'm sure, and this suggestion is no doubt far below the complexity of the actual work you're doing, but figured it wouldn't hurt to mention.

Are you going to speed up the file menu? Or will I have to split my collection into folders?
Loading the game list takes too long in the new versions.

Which is faster, bubble sort or quick sort...
Or strcasecmp() is so slow?
I believe a quick sort is faster than a bubble sort... if my Data Structures class knowledge is holding up. I didn't pay much attention in that one.

Everyone knows that the shotgun sort (bogosort) is the way to go through.

EDIT: It looks like quicksort is much more "memory friendly" than bubble sort due to its inner loop being able to be efficiently implemented on most platforms (according to Wikipedia).

quicksort isn't popular because it's memory friendly (bubble actually is smaller) it's popular because it's quite fast. it's an O(n log n) sort compared to bubble's O(n^2) so in almost every circumstance, it's significantly faster, and as your list to sort grows, it's often exponentially faster. the only advantage to bubble sort is that it's really really really easy to implement.
