Hardware Turning a Generic PIC into a Wii Drive Chip

If I were to buy a generic PIC, and a programmer, would I be able to stick YAOSM or some other code on it and use it as a Wii drive chip?

Yes. a 12f683 for example would be excellent for yaosm.
use a socket so you can easily remove and update the chip

You could even build the programmer yourself to save more money.
