Okay I currently have xp and i tried installing windows 7 using the upgrade but it says my version can't upgrade so I have to run custom but I don't want to delete all my stuff(music, pics, etc) so my question is is there a way to keep all my stuff without the need of a HDD or discs?

It's not possible. You can't upgrade from XP to 7, only Vista to 7. You need to use the backup/restore function to backup your data then fresh install Win 7 and use the tool to bring everything back.

It's much easier just to manually back up your docs.

Even when you make a clean install (not upgrade), your previous files will be stored in a windows.old folder. That includes Program Files, User Files (My Documents, settings, etc) and your previous Windows system so you can always restore to where you were before. At least that's how things work on my computer.

nah just be a badass and let everything get deleted

in fact just wipe your hard drive

lol

actually I'm not sure but i *think* you could repartition your drive so that you have the partition with xp that you're going to wipe, and a partition for backing up all your files
then you could download the Live CD version of GParted and then wipe the XP partition and reformat it for ntfs(/fat32?) and then clean install 7 on that partition. later on you could move the files from the other partition onto like another drive and then back
i dunno i guess you could do that if you were impatient

the safest way would be to:
backup
wipe xp
clean install 7

at least that's what i would do.
again, i *think* an upgrade cd is just a regular full copy of an os because i know i have a vista upgrade cd that i used after i wiped my hd and it worked perfectly (i don't think it matters at all that the previous os was xp since i COMPLETELY wiped my drive...nothing left lol)

i dunno i hope this helps somehow

EDIT: I don't think you can do anything with the windows.old folder since you're in the new OS, but i don't know if it keeps your files that you had, but it seems like it should. but it's always best to BE SAFE lol

You obviously don't know what a CLEAN INSTALL is do you!?

A clean install formats your drive and installs!

QUOTEand your previous Windows system so you can always restore to where you were before.

WHUT? how the hell does that work if you CLEAN INSTALL and wipe the drive duh!
