So how would you change the Wii serial number that's hard coded into the Wii? I haven't seen any hack to change this value.

QUOTE(hatredg0d @ Dec 4 2009, 01:23 AM) Hmm, my wii's ip hasn't changed. but my computers change every day. my computers ip's always start with 71. but the wii's always 192. it may change through lan, but dont it stay the same through internal wireless?
Your internet service provider (ISP) controls your IP address. The IP address could be a static number or a dynamic number depending on what your ISP determines whats best for its clients. If you cancelled your internet service and switched to a different ISP or took your wii to a buddies house and connected to the internet you'll see that the IP on your Wii changes.

Since your Wii starts with a 192 number, that tells me its behind a router. Your router has a DNS on it that assigns your wii an IP address. The router controls how long this IP address is assigned to your wii based on your Mac Address. If the lease on this IP Address expires, it could give you a new IP address based on if another device takes that IP lease when your Wii is not connected. If your Wii has 24/7 connect on or if you connect to the internet often, then your Wii IP would stay the same since the lease would refresh. I don't see why your PC is not behind the router as well. I would recommend setting up your computer behind your router if you have any control over your home network.

Either way lets try to stay on topic, tracking the IP address from the thief is what is important here, not the IP address of the Wii.

1.) the wii mail number has nothing to do with the serial number. period. Nintendo does not keep list of serial numbers and wii message numbers. the only possible way i could see them being able to track it would be through the wii shop. witch is also reset-able.

2.)my wii's ip address is out of my providers range. and i just confirmed it. wii's ip dose not change through internal wireless, its a life long ip address. it falls under the "IANA Special Use" category. and yes SOME devises like network printers and stuff, also have lifetime ip addresses. maybe you should look up types of ip addresses before you come bitching. and being online all the time does not effect if your ip changes or not. LOL. it depends on what type of ip your service providers give you. when your ip expires, it gets renewed. ming expire and renew every day, and switch ip's in the process.. i have 3 computers one of them is on 24/7. my point is, my ip adress's switch every day, and they are always in specific range. regardless of subnet masks and stuff. and the wii's ip is not static, or dynamic. look it up.

And if you dont belive me. use 'who is ip" to look it up. see if it matches your computers ip info. not saying you cant fake it. but most people cant.

And on topic, if the wii's ip address is not important, and your trying to track it through ip address's? ip address's are not an accurate way to track something. and the wii is probally getting sold, wouldn't even be the thief with it when/if you found it.

Your right on this, I just checked and the Wii serial number is not the same as the email address for the Wii. I'll give you that one, I was just hoping it would help the original poster find his email faster.Nintendo does keep track of its serial numbers, and any manufacture has to by law. I can even prove it, goto clubnintendo.com and register your DS or Wii and it'll know what color it is and which version. Nintendo has this information but your right its not the same as the email.

Because its connected to your router which gives you that IP. I should have explained that the router uses your Class A IP from your ISP and creates a Class C IP for your Wii. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ip_address#IPv4_subnetting Your PC your said was 71 which falls under Class A, which is a valid IP for the internet. Your Wii was 192 which is Class C which means your router takes that Class A 71 number and creates a new subnet in Class C.

IANA Special Use is for loopback, multicast , or private networks. Cases like 127.0.0.1. These IP never see the internet. http://www.iana.org/abuse/faq.html Your Wii does not fall into this category.

You said your Wii IP doesn't change and now your saying it does. Your getting yourself dizzy here.

I said we're tracking the location of the person or place where the Wii would respond to the email, not the device itself. Again, not the Wii's IP, the thief's IP. From there the internet service provider knows the address of where this connection is made and the police could track it down.

This is the third time I had to correct you and your not helping the original poster. So don't get mad at me I'm trying to help the original poster, not you to understand how it works but looks like I had to tell you anyway.

Basically, people not understanding the difference between an internal NAT address assigned by DHCP and your external IP address assigned by your ISP.

Isn't all mails going through nintendo? Which makes the reply to contain the ninty's ip address...

I don't think ninty will pass this sensitive information in the replies from wiis...

But of course they should be storing this information somewhere, may be obtained in such a case with a legal request or something...

And finally, you can't send an email to a wii if you didn't register your normal email address in the wii beforehand...

---

Here is the useful information,
If you have any backup saves somewhere, you can obtain your wii's mac address and console id from those save files. If that wii ever gets online, nintendo can see it's ip address.

To get the mac address & console id information from a savefile you can use key grabber distributed along with FE100, just click Get Stuff From Savefile button and give a savefile.

Great idea, WiiCrazy!

But don't tell Nintendo that you got your mac address from your save. (May just give your save to Nintendo also.) Tell them you did write it down once..

About the console id. Can you be able to see it without Nintendo Backup disc / Save file key grabber. (Or is it the friend code?)

I don't think you can see the console id or mac number using retail software for the wii... Yep you are right, the correct form of communication with nintendo should be like something along the lines of "Here is a savefile left from my wii and I heard that savefiles could contain serious information about a wii's identity"

If nintendo doesn't have an already established procedure for such cases it won't get through most of the people since the issue regarding saves is rather technical... However if there is indeed such procedure they might themselves ask you if you had a savefile left from the wii...

Btw, console id doesn't survive the formatting I guess but mac address should be permanent if the thief is not a master in these things.... which I give a very very small chance...

Implying that your LAN IP has to be assigned by DHCP and can only be used for NAT.

This is a good anti-theft system. It won't get your wii back but will screw whoever took it out if a wii.

1 - Use preloader to auto launch an installed app. We'll call this app: BrickMii.
2 - BrickMii app works by displaying a blackscreen for 3 seconds before launching the system menu.
3 - BrickMii also silently (without a prompt) waits for a button press on the wiimote - the A button to be precise.
4 - After 5 boots with out getting the required button press, it deletes the system menu and the preloader IOS, then shuts down power.
5 - If BrickMii gets the button press, it resets it's count.

lock your doors and move to a decent neighborhood? isnt that easier to avoid crime

i understand it can happen anywhere, but just saying.

and i stole your wii!! hahaha

jk it would be cool to make an app that silently broadcasts some type of code so you could talk to it if you ever needed to. theft sucks, period.

Also, I was referring to this:

Next time install a gps chip inside your Wii. That way you can track it via satellite.

Other then that you'll need a divine miracle to track down your Wii.
