Why are Wii all whining? A name is a name, a game is a game.

Because if the name doesn't have mass market appeal it'll damage the consoles reputation. Everyone here in Australia calls the Gamecube the Gaycube, get the idea? Gamecube sales in Australia are non-existant. No sales, less developer support, less developer support less games. I thought Nintendo wanted a less kiddy image for their new console. Regardless of whether I like the name or not I'm seriously doubting that Nintendo Wii will be a trendy name spoken casually on the streets.

"I'm going home to play some PS2."
"Really? I just got a new game for my Wii, wanna play?"
"Don't talk to me"

Exactly, you hit the nail on the head (Ow!). That's exactly what I've been trying to say. Nintendo said they were going for this whole mass market non-kiddy not-just-hardcore-gamers image with the Revolution. And then they make the name synonymous with the kiddified name for urine and a penis? Well, with this one name change they just aliented the general consumer market (If it's not a gag, that is). And if that's the case, then the "Wii", is already dead in the water.

Yep

What did people say when the name 'Nintendo Revolution' was announced.

"Oh wow, that sounds like an interesting console"

That's the sort of response Nintendo Wii should get if it's going to be sucessful with non-gamers. I've talked to non-gamers about the Nintendo Revolution telling them how it's going to be 'revolutionary'. The name works, it has power behind it. I can't imagine talking to someone about the Nintendo Wii. "The Nintendo Wii is going to be so....err..um..." The Nintendo Wii name kind of looks good written down but being spoken outloud it seems kind of silly.

I've gotten kind of used to the new name and I personally think it's interesting and unique, but I dislike it for the sole reason that the name wont stick with mass market appeal here in Australia. If it does I'll eat my words.

Maybe they'll call it the Oui in France.

I think it's a dumb name, but whatever. As long as the games are good. Like the old saying goes "A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet."

I'll probably just take to calling it "Nintendo" anyway.

Something has just occured to me though. Nintendo has made "official announcements" before that proved to be entirely false a few months down the line? Lest Wii not forget, "This is the final design for the Nintendo DS and it won't change before launch"? Or how about "There are no plans at this time to redesign the Nintendo DS"?

So who knows. Maybe Nintendo is just fucking with us to boost publicity.

Also, does anyone find it strange that they haven't bothered to change the website to wii.nintendo.com?

Actually, if they do keep this name, I'm pretty positive I will scream "Bonjour, je voudrais acheter une Nintendo WRYYYYYYYYYYY!" in Micromania.

And again,

Who cares about the fuckin' name? Who cares about fucking DEFENDING IT?
Do you guys actually "defend" your TOYS? What, to look more mature?

Anyway, if you don't like it, call it the Nintendo WRYYYYYY.
Damn, a lotta 4channers here, but mostly /b/tards.

Who cares about the name? We do, the fans do. There are those who will blindly except it, and then there are those who don't want Nintendo to go bankrupt when nobody buys their console based on the name alone.

come on, it's just a name..."iPod" or "Xbox" don't make sense either...
I like the name better than "XBox Threesixty" or "PlayStation 3"...they're just so old...
those who want to get a Wii won't care about the name, and those who don't want a Wii shouldn't care about it...at least Nintendo came up with a new name...

IGN Wii: Some fans have already started petitions in hopes of somehow convincing Nintendo to change the name. Any message for these people?

Perrin Kaplan: Live with it, sleep with it, eat with it, move along with it and hopefully they'll arrive at the same place.

Edit: An interesting point brought up in that convo. When you first heard google, what was your reaction then? And how often can you hear the word google now in normal conversation?

I'm glad nintendo is doing things differently this time around, cause gaming was going down the same ol same ol route it was going, but now that a new road is being paved, people are getting a little shaken up.

I hope what nintendo works out so it can shut everyone up big time ^^

An interesting point. A valid one as well. But remember this, when Google first began it wasn't mainstream. It was a tiny little search engine in the far reaches of the internet used by the supergeeks and hackers of the time. Whereas after years of growth and expansion it became the behemoth it is today. However, the Nintendo Wii doesn't have that luxury. It will launch directly into the mainstream, basically, it has no building block time. Whereas Google had years and years to become what it is today... a consoles average lifespan is 5 - 6 years. I'm willing to agree that given time, and proper word of mouth it could have flourished in the shadows, and eventually hit the mainstream and been a huge success. But as a console, it doesn't have that kind of time. It also will start out in the mainstream, and in that particular stream... it's sink or swim.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see Nintendo flourish under the Wii name. I'm sure given time I could accept it, and maybe even like the name. However the general public is not nearly as accepting as the fans, and that's what matters. I'm merely trying to think what would be in Nintendo's best interest in order for them to hit the ground running, and keep at a solid pace throughout the consoles lifespan.

Google sounds SO much better than Wii, though. First time I heard of Google I didn't think it was weird at all. Wii is just... so random and misleading. When you say "Nintendo Revolution," you instantly get this idea of something special. However, when you say "Wii," I don't think you can deny what the first thoughts that come into your head are.

honestly, I don't like the name that much either...when I first read the official Nintendo newspost, I thought Wii is the name for the Revolution onlinegaming service (which would be much better, because "Wii" play together), or Virtual Console service...it just doesn't sound like something big, something as big as REVOLUTION...it sounds more like the name of a gadget or some Nintendo service

but like I already said, I don't care about the name, the Nintendo Wii is gonna rock, and as long as there are Mario, Zelda and Metroid games, every Nintendo console is a must-have...
