"More" doesn't mean "better" though.

The "unrealistic expectations" are about the scope. "I want a game with a million hours of content, 20,000 possible endings, I want thousands of NPCs with dialog trees, I want what took 400 people 6 years to make... and I want it to cost $40 because games shouldn't cost more than that."

That's not gonna happen.

But we will see a bunch of attempts at procedurally generated maps, AI generated characters and storylines, and ChatGPT generated dialogue, in an attempt to reach/surpass the size of BG3. They will suuuuuuck.

It's entirely situational. Ubisoft has no problem churning out 250 hours of repetitive shite, and Blizzard has no problem churning out 20 hours of quality story content. Both of these companies have far more personnel AND funding at their disposal than Larian does, however, so their excuses for why they can't do 100+ hours of quality content ring hollow.

It also doesn't help that the industry celebrates mediocrity. If GOTY was based solely on quality, the race would be between RE4R, BG3, and Armored Core 6 this year. Instead it's a popularity contest weighted by age group, and so Hogwart's Legacy or ToTK is much more likely to win despite their many flaws.

For the price, i usually do one of these :
1: if the game is from a franchise i already love, ill probably just buy it
2: if the game is one im interested to play, i'll just "acquire" it (yohohoho way), and play it abit to see what is its worth to my eyes. Then, i'll buy it when its price lowers or, if i really like it, buy it full price if it is worth it to me
