The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is coming May 25 after several years of delays

It's been a long journey for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum to get released, but it looks like it may finally be at an end. Originally announced in March 2019 and slated for a 2021 release, it was then shifted to a September 2022 launch date, before being indefinitely delayed yet again in July of last year. Yesterday, a new story trailer dropped, announcing the newest release date of May 25, 2023. This is the shortest window between the announcement of a release date and the expected release yet, so hopefully we can have a bit more confidence in this date.

Coming from Daedalic Entertainment, developer of the Deponia franchise, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is an action RPG that will follow Gollum in an all-new story. There will also be a morality system in play, with player choices deciding whether Gollum or Sméagol, his kinder side, is the more dominant presence. If your decisions favour one side more than the other, it may be harder to let that other side out when you need it.

A fuller gameplay showcase was released around the same time as the story trailer, which you can see below.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will release May 25 for PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. A Nintendo Switch version is expected sometime later in 2023.

Honestly even as a LOTR nerd, I was never expecting much from this, but from the video it looks pretty good. At least the story telling side looks like it could be really interesting. Using Gollum as a way to tell the story from both sides of the conflict is an interesting idea, but the gameplay looks kind of generic and bland.

Missed opportunity to make it a film, Gollum was definitely a more interested character than Sauron imo. Now we have to pay $60 to watch a game movie...

Looks good i could waist a few hours playing it. Depending on what fetch quests and side quests they have present...kind of a little worried nothing about quests and stuff is mentioned. Hopefully it isnt just a big empty world you sneak around in.

Graphics look like this was made for PS3 😅😆😂
It legit looks like a PS4 remaster of a PS3 game, lol. Kinda crazy.

I hope for the devs' sake the game is good, because it looks like there's some real heart in it, but man, it really doesn't look good.

@SylverReZ, atleast wiimmfii went fine although people only use it for Mario kart Wii
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
At least if they ban you for cheating, get another Wii. They're cheap as chips.

Remember when RiiShop was a thing?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
    not really
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
It got shutdown because somebody "accidentally" leaked the database for the amount of people using the beta.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
RiiShop is the laziest way of downloading Wii games. Did somebody not think of this through?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
although i ended up accidentally changing my nand with no way of going back bc i didn't know you needed a gamecube controller to restore it (i have a wii minus/1.1, which doesn't have gamecube controller support)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, I think you're talking about the recovery mode that the SaveMii used, and also was to restore softbricked systems.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
If your NAND was hardbricked, then just buy another Wii. Or go with the dirty NAND flasher method.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and if i find the sd card i have my NAND backed up on, i can not only restore the NAND if i solder the right part in, but i can also put my NAND on dolphin, then i can play dolphin online, like PMEX Remix or MKWii Riibalanced
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    Brb
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, Oh yeah, that was a thing too. Dolphin does support Wiimmfi.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
yeah you just need to put your NAND backup with wiimmfi on it
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
ngl i feel like if a bunch of my friends have wiis and know how to get wiimmfi and back up their NAND, then we could do a PMEX Remix tournament
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
maybe even add UMVC3/DBFZ and make it a biathlon/triathlon
