But syko, not only was that a different time period, that analogy doesn't really make sense. 'X' number of gamers can only change so much. There aren't enough Non-gamer, non-pirates, that aren't buying because of price to fill the gap. Most people think that lowering the price of something still nets the same profit, but you have to sell A LOT more for that to be so.
i was just stating that even then when stores would raise the prices on games people were STILL buying the games but now everything is the excuse of oh its too expensive. Games are a lot better graphically and a lot more time is put into making them then back then and the price is still about the same people complain about high prices but really pirate just for the sole fact that they can.

Oh, I see, I didn't really understand. I agree, it's (usually) not a money thing, it's a thrill, 'free is free' type things. I'm sure most people are guilty of downloading something just because they can.

I stopped playing my 360, xbox, ps2, psx and psp.

All because I got a flashcart.

For my psp, its a 3001 with a bootleg memorystick so I just use it to surf the interwebs before I sleep.

the only problem i have(for myself anyway) when it comes to pirating is having too many games and when i start playing 1 game 20 minutes in i want to play something else and cant stick to one game because i have too many....

The way blizzard and lolonlive plan to combat

The only way you can access/use games is right off of their servers

Without money, then there would be no point in creating these games. people spend their time into these things, and to those people; time = money

hmm... force the user to register the game online
biggrin.gif

users will find a serial code on the back of the box, then they will enter it online, then will get a new code and must enter it in game. but if it is pre-owned... that's where everything is contradicted. the solution for that is... to remove all pre-owned games
biggrin.gif
. but they should already be pre-activated... but people who rip ROMs might've ripped a pre-activated game... gah xD. this is hard.

First off, discounting steam since that is few nicer working "DRM" solutions; most of DRM fuck the customer badly in arse and pirates just remove it. Sometimes even paying customers need to resort for cracks to play their legal content, what really is ef'd up.

Also, that is blatant evil pirate statement to say that lower price would not help. I and YOU know what me who owns quite few flashcarts do with them, but with steam and especially steam sales I have made quite few purchases, just being great outlet, and being cheaper for a limited time, and articles tell how much profit those sales make.

But ultimately killing pirates is like trying to kill World of warcraft with a mmo; best you can do is make riveting product to sell well to co-exist with the pirates - I am afraid...

to slow down piracy you would need to make piracy not worth doing, as in lower prices, for those who think its the wrong course of action, how much money do you think these companies make, look at myth makers games they make 3 games out of 1 game and sell for £30 each, the main reason why people pirate is to get somthing for free, or in my case to give the system the middle finger.

If games were really cheap then people wouldnt pirate, whcih would you prefer a dodgy copy of a game or a spangly new game from nintendo etc I know what i would prefer, £40 for a game no matter how good it is is way too much money, if the game was say £15 or less then everyone would buy it as opposed to a % buying it.

you wouldnt see groups hacking and releasing games because it would not be worth it

in my eyes companies who keep their prices high and bitch about piracy are just greedy, so in short to slow or remove piracy remove the need to do it, not to punish or enforce more laws that just makes it worse, lowering prices and having some quality control on some games and systems.

The profit margins if the game was cheaper but there was no piracy would probably surpass the game at a higher price with piracy depending on how much of the client base is actually pirating impossible to know

Remember that Hentai bricker for the DS? Include that, but it only plays if it detects a flashcart. Sure, it's not foolproof, but it would detract people, I'm sure.

The problem with that is that illegal software acts just like the legit stuff. There is no way to tell whether the the music you have is legal or pirated because its all just copying 0s and 1s. It would be a difficult task for a game to be programed to detect a flash cart, because they act just like a legit cart.

QUOTE(Dr.Killa @ Mar 6 2010, 07:38 PM) I KNOW HOW TO STOP NDS PIRACY

1. you must be a nintendo worker
2. make a random account on this website (or hack Toni Plutonij or some one)
3. claim you ported starfox 64 or something to the DS, with "proof videos"
4. include a link to the download file (make it be like 32 mb large with a .nds extension)
5. when everyone downloads and runs it, it turns out to be a NDS bricker.

There are so many things wrong with this, I dont even know where to start.
1. Thats a pretty low brow action to take against your own costumers.
2.Hacking like that is a serious offense.
3.Crappy proof vids will be discredited by the more intelligent ones in the community.
4./5. You will prolly brick 100 DS's tops. There will be waves of reports that Nintendo tried to brick theyr own stuff, using fake starfox or whatever ports. People would be pissed at Nintendo, not stopped from pirating stuff.

A bit off topic but I do sometimes feel a little guilty pirating really good games that I think devs deserve the money for, (Little Kings Story makers have gone bankrupt and that was a game that didnt sell well but I thought was really good, they are also behind the hotel dusk games), but when greedy Infinity Ward raise the RRP for CoD 6, with a campaign of 4 hours, I dont give a damn

I would make it worth your time not to pirate.

These days software companies basically own the game after you buy it. You can only play Ubisoft games when connected to a server that gows down so you can't use what you paid for. Not to mention limited installs.

The only way to truly have control of what you pay for is to not pay for it at all. Sad really.

Piracy can be effective if used properly. 360 download content still can't be hacked with the lastest dash, they made leaps this year with the old dash but still currently a majority of 360 owners can't pirate DLC and XBLA.

And for the record gaming companies HATE rental stores and second hand stores like Gamestop so implementing some sort of cart thing with an activation code that works only one time could kill two birds with one stone. Will it last forever? No, anything can be hacked over time (I assume) but the 360 still is doing a decent job at protecting at least THAT content.

Since piracy is soooo rampant I say screw it, get advertisers on board. EA already does it with NFS series, Super Monkey Ball did it, every game will should just jack up their sponsers, hell put commercials after each level. Imagine Dragon Age where you use "Uncle Ben Rice" to heal your life, or Johnson and Johnson band-aids to heal a fallen team mate? Change the name of Princess Peach's castle to the "Home Depot Castle", Oh wait Mario hit the question mark and gets... wait for it .... Nike shoes that increase his speed, next question mark and he lands a can of Green Giant green beans to make him grow! You get the point!

True, but consider that there are benefits to piracy.

When you pirate something, you can do whatever you want with it. Send it here, use it there, put it on a USB drive, take it anywhere. Use it on your friends' computers, as many times as you want, whenever you want. It will always work as long as you need. It's a true example of what free trade SHOULD be: you pay to use something any way you want. It's yours, they have your money and you have their product. There is no logical or ethical reason a company should still take ownership of something you have purchased before.

Just look at Hackintosh ISO's. You can get them anywhere on the Internet and they will run on a lot of Intel-based computers. You are no longer locked to their arguably shitty hardware. It's yours to use how you see fit.

If Apple released Mac OS X for all Intel computers at Windows prices, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

EDIT: this was for Am0s

@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though

@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
