Additional info: Nintendo Switch came with Joy-Cons, two Joy-Con straps, HDMI cable, the official dock, and AC adaptor. The right Joy-Con no longer works.

I don't plan to update it to 5.0.0 or 5.0.1 because I want to install homebrew and custom firmware once it's available for 4.1.0.

I don't remember the firmware on the Nintendo Switch when it was purchased, but since it was in November I assumed it was 4.0.1 (I think), and I updated once to 4.1.0, which is the firmware it's currently running.

At my local Target they had a Switch with serial XAW700123. I can't find much info on the XAW700 numbers. Does anyone think this could be a 3.0.0? My wife bought me a switch the other day and it's on 4.0.1 and I'm wondering if it's worth exchanging.

Ok I've waited a few weeks and I can still see the XAW700094 at target, if I can't see a lower one I'll get that today

Went to Target and could see the one at the very front of the display case, XAW700012...
Haven't tried it yet though.
If your store has them in a cabinet ask for the front one cos obviously they fill it from the back

Yes, XAW1000 is pretty save 1.0.0.

It depends, 1.0.0 will get the Atmosphere CFW first, but you will be locked out of playing games that require a higher fw.
I don't thing the advantage of have a 1.0.0 will be that big. On the other side, I heard that 1.0.0 consoles are quite sought after on
ebay. Could be worth to buy from the money perspective.
