I didn't see anyone say that piracy was the main reason for failure.

But piracy obviously doesn't help. No developer or publisher looks at a console and says, "Hey, this thing is cracked wide open so we should definitely port our games over to it."

The Xbox 360 and PS3 were well supported, but who can say whether or not they wouldn't have been *better supported* if the piracy didn't exist?

It's well established that piracy was certainly one of the factors behind the failure of the Dreamcast. So only a total idiot would conclude that it wouldn't be possible for piracy to have a detrimental effect on any other consoles.

But having said all that, I'm not here to preach. I like free games just as much as everyone else. But let's not bullshit here - piracy is NOT helpful to any platform.
Piracy was available for the DS and Wii fairly early on but that didn't stop them from becoming the second best and sixth best selling consoles ever respectively. While piracy was one of the factors for the Dreamcast's failure was piracy, it was no where near the main factor.

If you want to play the game normally then yes, you must do it. But keep in mind that if you do update your switch, you wont have access tothe homebrew plutoo will be releasing in February, which doesnt really makes sense since you will probably be able to play zelda on that coming hack. If i were you, i would wait. This plutoo method seems way easier than the team xecuter, which will most likely be a hardmod stuff. So in short, dont update

I am hoping we can get cartridge games working without needing to update FW.

Hi everyone, my first post on this forum :).

Just wondering, I’m seeing a lot of people on 2.x, 3.x, 4.x firmware and a very few on 1.x.

So my question is, will we have a real long term support for 1.x firmware ?
I’ve seen somewhere that 1.x is the best firmware and will be the first one to get exploited via « jamais vu ».

Are the « hackers » confident to have CFW on that version that will be maintained in the future ?
Won’t they more focus on 2.x and 3.x which are TrustZone hackable and Homebrew ready (for 3.0.0) ?

Thanks.

I wonder why the homebrew scene for Switch move so slow? Usually after we got the first homebrew running people would had port all emulator to it already but we hadn't see even one emulator running yet.

Um, what? How..did you miss the news on here, and especially on the front page where it clearly states "Linux for Switch"?

Is it possible to develop an application that can transfer files between the Switch and computer through USB?

I would try to do this myself, but I never learned how to interact with a USB device before.

Dumb question but doing the whole block the updates thing. Will that block us from downloading anything or playing online?

Excuse the question if it feels dumb, please:

When one redeems the gold coins of a physical game to his my.nintendo account, can the same cartridge be redeemed to another my.nintendo accoutn as well?

If not, doesn't this mean that the NSw can write data on the cartridges? Does this consist of an entry point in order to gain low access to the system for exploits etc?

If we could do that people would share codes online in order to create an excessive number of coins from one purchase

What happens is every cartridge has an ID, be it some sort of serial or whatnot, that is likely also listed on Nintendo's servers. (Previously, 3DS games came with an extra leaflet with a code printed on it, don't they still do this?) When someone redeems their gold coins on MyNintendo, the site checks that ID off the list.

It's the same system that prepaid eShop/game/steam cards use.

BTW, I assume that the CFW SciresM is working on is futureproof? As in, one it's installed, no system update will delete it?

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
