Hey all, posting this as much to document this for others to see as much as to try and get help. I have looked everywhere I can think of and have not found anyone experiencing the same behaviours as this Switch.
I am suspecting a hardware failure with one of the chips but have not completely ruled out a bad firmware update. I am currently doing a backup of the NAND before I try touching the firmware (if I can).
Anyway, the story with this Switch is:
I purchased this Switch broken and was told that it was working fine until it was sold and then it was returned because it kept freezing and showing a blue screen. The seller said that it was working when they tested it and could not get it to freeze or blue screen while they played on it. This could be true or a lie, I have no idea.
I turned it on and it froze almost immediately in the main menu. I hard reset it and got a blue screen. It then blue screened whenever I hard reset unless you leave it off for awhile. Then you can boot it back up normally. It sometimes stays on the main menu for 5min before freezing again, sometimes does not. Then you are back to blue screen on reboot.
I have taken it apart and put the main board into another switch I had that was bricked after I updated it to 6.2. The Switch behaved exactly the same so that rules out all hardware except the main board.
I was able to boot it into recovery mode but after bricking a previous Switch whilst updating the firmware, I decided to do a NAND backup first. It booted to Hekate no problem. However, during the backup Emmc Sys, I plugged the charger in and it caused an error. Said something about the info did not match the SD card, and froze. I have noticed that plugging the charger in has seemed to cause the freeze but then it does freeze within 5min anyway whilst on the home menu even doing nothing.
Now when I try to boot it up, it shows the Nintendo logo then nothing after it and I have not been able to get back to the main Switch menu at all since the Hekate crash. I have managed to boot back into Hekate and I am now finishing the NAND backup before trying anything else.
As I said, I am posting this as much to document this fault as I am asking for help. If anyone has anything they want me to try then feel free to post. Whether it be to experiment or if you genuinely think it might work. As far as I am concerned at the moment, all information about Switch faults and unusual behaviour and errors is good info.
Once the NAND backup has finished, I might leave it running Hekate for a few hours to see if it freezes or not.
Additional Info:
The Switch does charge whilst turned off.
Have used original charger and that can cause the freeze also, whilst on home menu.
I have docked it and it worked, until freeze.
Firmware was 6.2 when it arrived.
