I've sifted through the forum (and other sites), but I have not found a definitive answer to these two questions (or maybe the info is out there and it avoids me).
I have two units. One is regularly updated; the other has been left on 3.0.0 .

I'm waiting for Atmosphere to come out in order to hack the 3.0.0, but two things I would like to understand:

1) I don't care about playing online with this unit, but I would very much like keep updating my backups. Do I risk a ban if I just update the backups? If so, will we be able to manually update by downloading and then installing the updates (in case of ban)?
2) The RCM/AutoRCM subject still eludes me. I've read somewhere that, up to 3.0.0, it will be possible to enter RCM via software (browser?). I don't get to play often, and so I don't like the idea to keep the Switch constantly in sleep mode. Do we still have to play with the pins when booting the console? Does AutoRCM have downsides?

Thank you for your help :)

P.S.
I know Atmosphere won't support game backups (by itself).

Yes: if you connect online a modded Switch, you risk the ban.
Yes: you can download .NSP from internet and update your games (also system updates without burn eFuses)

At least one time you have to use a jig to enter RCM Mode, then you can choose:
1) you can never turn off your Switch (only Sleep-Mode);
2) you can install auto-RCM: in this way you still have to inject a payload every time to enter in CFW but it doesn't require a jig anymore. Is it dangerous? You modify a file in your Switch and someone say that it drains battery and if it goes to 0% it requires a lot of time to recharge;
3) you can use a jig every time after you turned off your Switch.

Thank you for the quick and detailed reply.
It seems then there is no escaping the jig. I'm just a little concerned about the pins, but I suppose it'll be ok if I don't do it too often (I think I'll avoid auto-RCM).

There is another thing I would like to ask, but it's off-topic (I'll open another thread if necessary).

I've read countless threads now, but I still don't have in my head a clear comparison between SX OS and Atmosphere.
I know only the first one enables piracy (at least from the get-go), but the rest of the features are a bit murky to me.
I've read many people celebrating the easy of use of SX, but I would like to avoid giving money for a product that (for the most part) relies on the hard work of the scene. And so I'm willing to wait for Atmosphere, but what exactly SX offers now that Atmosphere won't be able to (at least in the short term, and putting aside the backup loading)? Now that we're very close to release (0.7 is almost ready apparently), I suppose it is possible to make reliable comparisons?

sx is the only cfw that loads xci. every other cfw only runs nsp right now.

nsp is almost 99% ban right now and xci so far are "kinda" safe as long as u don't play online and update the xci. that said some people said that the switch sends data to nintendo regardless of options so they might know you are running xci and sx users have said they got banned even thou they didnt play online.................

sx PRO also comes with the jig and dongle which makes for a hassle free load into cfw if u don't have your own jig and/or way to load the payload

Just a correction: If you don't go online nor update the .NSP, then it's the same ban chances as a .XCI

Having the good fortune to own a second switch just for hacking, this is not a worry. The 3.0.0 unit never went online and probably never will.
Any other advantages/disadvantages between XCI and NSP?

What would be the equivalent for Atmosphere of the SX dongle? How do we inject the payload?

EDIT: I suppose the answer to the second question is “TegraRcmGUI”.
EDIT 2: As for the first question, this thread is quite exhaustive (apologies, I haven't used the search function before asking about these formats...) .

I like autoRCM because I don't like messing with pins. I turn off the console by selecting restart, injecting the payload (one click on my computer), and selecting power off from the Hekate menu.

Just leave the switch in sleep mode it hardly loses any charge at all! ;)

    they need to have a strong line up on the launch titles too. I think they should move metroid prime 4 to the next console because by now it has been quite a while and there's no release date scheduled yet

    lol there's a guy selling mig switch in usa on ebay for $200/ea he's definitely going to get nailed with dmca by tomorrow

    well as far as metroid prime 4 is concerned, the next system probably is similar enough to the current gen they can probably easily just slap it onto a next gen cart and call it good :P
