I could recommend a couple games that you can play online:
- Mario Kart 7
- Kid Icarus Uprising
- Pokemon Sun/Pokemon Moon
- Animal Crossing New Leaf

My nieces love the LEGO games. They're around the same age as your two as well. Animal Crossing New Leaf would be good for the 10 year old as well.

and obviously, anything Mario and Sonic wise.

The games my niece already has are

New Super Mario Bros 2
Kirby Triple Deluxe
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask

Games I have, some of which I could give her

Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer
Bravely Default
Bravely Second
Chibi Robo Zip Lash
Code Name Steam
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
Fire Emble Awakening
Fire Emblem Echoes Shadows Of Valentina
Fire Emblem Fates
Hyrule Warriors Legends
Kid Icurus Uprising
Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance
Mario & Luigi Dream Team Bros
Mario Tennis Open
Persona Q
Pokemon Alpha Sapphire
Pokemon Moon
Pokemon Sun
Pokemon X
Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World
Resident Evil Revelations
Tom Clancy'S Ghost Recon Shadow Wars

Any of the "girly" games any good? Or better to stick the "usual suspects"?

If it makes a difference my nephew is actually 6 not 5 :P

For the ten year old I recommend:
Professor Layton series
Phoenix Wright series (may be a little old for her as of now)
Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer and New Leaf
Bravely Default series (again may be too old depending on her preferences)

For both:
Basically any Mario game and Kirby game. Most games have been recommended as of now.

My nephew (started playing at 5, he is now 7 years old) is good at mario kart, and any other racing game.
He also like Donkey kong and plateformer (Dora the explorer !), so it can be anything which captivate him.

he loves anything which involves mario, he is even playing some Mario and luigi RPG in english (he doesn't understand anything and doesn't even read, he is just happy moving and jumping around). he manages to do the battles and move around.
He doesn't seem to understand the purpose of saving the game progress :P but he doesn't care doing the same step again and again. I guess he doesn't care about reaching a goal, as long as he plays.

well, I didn't give you any suggestion, except mario ! just try and see what they cares about.
let them try and decide :)
provide few different genre, nobody likes the same thing.

Ps:
My nephew is addicted to screens (tv and video games), not good at this age... I don't know which consequences it will have later. currently, he has issue speaking correctly, but maybe it's unrelated, he just love speaking in his baby language.
If you can, don't let him get addicted this younger, supervise his play session, play with him, etc.

Have them play NES/GB/GBC games (or older if you want), and then slowly advance them as they grow older. Upgrade to like GBA/SNES, eventually reach N64/PSX. Hopefully by then, they will be monstrous gamers with godly reaction skills.
