This mod primarily replaces the character, monster, background and spell sprites from the Switch version of Dragon Quest III with the ones from the iOS/Android version of the game, which use pixel art style and mesh better with the tilesets of the game.
However, the Switch and Mobile versions are missing several unique sprites that were in the SNES version of the game and used generic NPC sprites instead:
Therefore I am including variants of this mod that restore these missing sprites into the game. They were extracted from the SNES version and their palettes were edited to match this port. There are three variants:

KNOWN ISSUES
A few field sprites (most notably the ship and Ramia) use non-integer scaling (250%), so it was impossible to replace them without distorting their pixel aspect ratio. To avoid having inconsistent pixel sizes, a pixel mixing algorithm was used during scaling that makes them look slightly blurrier than the rest of the sprites.
However, the Switch and Mobile versions are missing several unique sprites that were in the SNES version of the game and used generic NPC sprites instead:
- All villagers in Persistence
- Martial Artist in Khoryv
- Elder in Norvik
- Weeping women in Manoza
- Evil king of Manoza
- Hero sprites when becoming king of Romaria
- Swimming old man and woman
- Jipang girl hidden inside a pot
- Unarmed soldiers in Aliahan after defeating Baramos
- Tunnel construction
- Merchant sprites when becoming mayor of immigrant town
- Female player wearing the Scandalous Swimsuit/Magic Bikini/etc
- In the mobile version, a Merchant sprite in bikini is used for all vocations.
- In the Switch version, the same Merchant sprite is used but with different hair color depending on the vocation.
Therefore I am including variants of this mod that restore these missing sprites into the game. They were extracted from the SNES version and their palettes were edited to match this port. There are three variants:
- Sprite Overhaul
- Contains the mobile sprites without any modification.
-
- Sprite Overhaul (Restoration)
- Contains the mobile sprites and restores SNES-exclusive sprites.
- Since player sprites are larger than in the SNES version by a few pixels, the swimsuit sprites were manually adjusted to match the new style.
- The prologue frame and map background were removed, since they clash too much with the lower resolution art style.
-
- Sprite Overhaul (Restoration Alt)
- Same as the above, but swimsuit sprites are a mix between the mobile and Switch versions: a merchant sprite in swimsuit with different hair color depending on the vocation.
