Star Fox 64 remake for the Switch 2 announced in surprise Nintendo Direct

Airing last night with very little in the way of warning, a brand new Nintendo Direct was aired. Running for 15 minutes in total, it took a moment to celebrate the success of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie before swiftly announcing a brand new Star Fox game for the Switch 2. In the presentation we got a glimpse of the new game's art style, which appears to be quite a leap from the previous Wii U release, along with a breakdown of characters, the Arwing controls, the campaign, and a whole bunch more.

You can check out the full Nintendo Direct in the video above. The game is available to pre-order now, with it set to cost £41.99 digitally and launch on the 25th of June. Physical pre-orders are not yet live, though the revealed box art does at least seem to confirm that it will not be a Game Key Card release.

You know, my jaw would almost be through the floor with excitement if this wasn't another remake of the same game again.

I guess the intention is to pull people in from the SMG movie and hope Star Fox is profitable enough to make an actually new game, but it's wishful thinking...

This isn't really what the Switch 2 needs right now.

The art style is not the problem, it's consistent and ticks all the boxes. Different isn't bad. It looks like how Assault was supposed to look.

Not gonna lie. I ordered a.... refurbished Switch 2 because of this game. Just because I'm in "fuck you" mode with Nintendo, doesn't mean I'm not able to play their games at a lower price without funding that company 🤪.

... Now to bide my time and wait for used copies. 🤣

In a series where half the games are already retellings of the first game, releasing another one will definite definitely deter some fans that already played one of the "first games".

I already played Starwing, Lylat Wars and Zero. Will I play it for a forth time? Maybe with a friend in co-op.
The versus multiplayer looks pretty interesting this time. You're not just flying in circles and shooting homing shots.
Well obviously, those "fans" are not buying enough for Nintendo to take risk on a new game (since they already took a ton of risk from the previous games). This is not the 16-bit era anymore where games are made in 6 months. I still think rebooting 64 is a good entry point for "new fans" to get those numbers up.

When I saw Fox McCloud in the new Mario movie, I knew this or a Starfox movie was coming. Cool nonetheless.

What did they do to my boy Slippy Toad? Holy hell.
Like the graphics in general that look like one of those "What if Ocarina of Time was made in Unreal Engine?" videos from YouTube but I'm not so sure about the characters.
Also if they put work into a new engine, why not also making a new game with new levels? Creating rail shooter levels shouldn't take a big franchise's team that long?

If that Direct achieved one thing, it is that I'm going to play this on my MiSTer again:

On the one hand, it's Star Fox 64 again.

On the other hand, it's the last Star Fox game that Nintendo made which seemed to both successful, remembered and I don't hear many complaints about....other than how they can't seem to move on from it.

As for the art style, reminds me of Fantastic Mr Fox.

I'll probably end up picking it up at some point presuming it's any good.

It looks pretty good to me and I do like the characters, although it seems it may not be for everyone.
I've been wanting a good Starfox all the more since playing Starlink (the physical Arwing was pretty cool too), this game also seems to improve the plot so I have no complaints there.

I'm not a long-time Star Fox fan or anything, but this looks really good! Sure, Falco looks a little rough, but the movie-like visuals look pretty awesome. Cinematic fox is literally furry bait.

Also, while it's great there are mouse controls, it feels like a missed opportunity how light gun-like pointer controls aren't planned.

I can't say I care though, even if I had a Switch 2, this is yet another game-key card game. First-party, too.

Honestly the faces aren't the worst part IMO, it's the legs/feet being human proportions down to the bottom of the knee, but animal proportions from there:

Doubly weird since they have a joke about Fox's iconic "space boots" in the Mario Galaxy movie, which is how they've always looked in Smash Bros too.

You sure about that? Because all the evidence I'm seeing points to the contrary. That said, I guess you live in one of those countries where all the stores are too cheap to stock actual physical games.

Either that, or you're part of the negativity grift, because anyone with a working pair of eyes can see the box art (which Scarlet mentioned, by the way).

My bad, I saw that in the video and assumed there isn't going to be a proper physical release. I'm not in the Switch 2 ecosystem at all, so it looks like my intuition failed me.

I'm not really in the Switch 2 ecosystem myself right now (money's tight for my family right now, so all game-related spending is severely restricted). That said, I don't really see any reason why Nintendo would change how they handle first-party physical games this early in the Switch 2's lifetime (much less for Star Fox specifically, given it'll be the same price as Splatoon Raiders, which also won't be a Game Key Card game), considering the Game Key Card option was introduced and advertised primarily for third-party publishers.

Pokopia is an exception primarily because of the...unique circumstances regarding the Pokemon IP as a whole, which affects Pokemon games in ways Nintendo's full first-party games aren't (ex: games have to release within a set period to line up with merchandise, rather than being given time for development as needed). I would not be surprised if the Gen 10 games end up being Game Key Cards as well (Legends Z-A would never have been, since Switch 2 physical's just a Switch 1 cartridge with details for the Switch 2 upgrade).
