Star Fox 64 remake for the Switch 2 announced in surprise Nintendo Direct

Airing last night with very little in the way of warning, a brand new Nintendo Direct was aired. Running for 15 minutes in total, it took a moment to celebrate the success of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie before swiftly announcing a brand new Star Fox game for the Switch 2. In the presentation we got a glimpse of the new game's art style, which appears to be quite a leap from the previous Wii U release, along with a breakdown of characters, the Arwing controls, the campaign, and a whole bunch more.

You can check out the full Nintendo Direct in the video above. The game is available to pre-order now, with it set to cost £41.99 digitally and launch on the 25th of June. Physical pre-orders are not yet live, though the revealed box art does at least seem to confirm that it will not be a Game Key Card release.

I've settled on liking it but not loving it overall. Nintendo has been taking a ton of risks with all their other IPs, but then release the same content for the fourth time with Star Fox. If they're "testing the waters" for future games, they're kind of setting it up to fail.

Why are they remaking this game for the 35175916579156179561795613976 time. When will they learn that Star Fox was nothing more than a fancy tech demo, other rail shooters have already surpassed it by a huge margin.

Also, the art style genuinely looks disgusting, it reminds me of those early 2010's hyper-realistic live action adaptations of cartoon characters we would see coming from Hollywood movies, it will age like milk compared to Star Fox Zero or even 64 itself (which totally embraced the low-poly style, even for the promotional art).

The graphics grew on me so I think I might get this once I have the chance. I still have a ton of backlog not clearing anytime soon lmao.

They probably are just gauging interest. The only Starfox game that sold well is 64.

Honestly what I really want from the Star Fox series is a roguelike entry. The gameplay has always been fine enough. Give us a random star system to venture through, upgrades to the Arwing throughout that you can pick from. It feels like that kind of thing would blend well with the base Star Fox 64 arcadey vibe.

Technically, Star Fox Adventures also sold well (about 1.8mil during the GameCube era), but it was also one of the more divisive titles since it was more of an action-adventure game (based on Rare's original Dinosaur Planet project for N64), and thus didn't carry over anything from 64.

Past that, though...the only thing that even came close (i.e. >1mil sales) was Star Fox 64 3D...which was essentially Star Fox 64 ported to the 3DS and given upgraded textures, so still basically 64.

Whisker Squadron: Survivor is indeed quite fun.

I'm genuinely worried for the future of Nintendo.

It's literally just going to be remakes in the style of the movies for the next decade. Nintendo Cinematic Universe synergy.

Ugly sonic looking starfox, ugly realistic Zelda, ugly realistic Kirby, ugly realistic [insert next movie here]

It's over.

Tell me which one, I'm still awaiting for a game that properly replicate Star Fox

Agreed

Star Fox 64 is one of my favourite games but I really wish they'd done something else. It was already perfect as it was. I get it that it's supposed to be a series reboot and all that, but I don't think that's going to make numbers. It's such a readily available game.

Also Star Fox Zero is good. Genuinely good. I'll die on this hill!

That's how franchises become money-making opportunities and less good to the fans. Agreed.

In a series where half the games are already retellings of the first game, releasing another one will definite definitely deter some fans that already played one of the "first games".

I already played Starwing, Lylat Wars and Zero. Will I play it for a forth time? Maybe with a friend in co-op.
The versus multiplayer looks pretty interesting this time. You're not just flying in circles and shooting homing shots.
