Ah,i don't see a real reason to downgrade a o3ds or 2DS to 2.1 yet as no cfw will work with a9lh just yet and probably won't for months now, by the time we can use this new launch method with sysnand a much more safer downgrade and upgrade method will have arrised I bet.
Yeah, besides faster boot times, I wouldn't recommend the average person to do this yet.

otp reinand and other random shit... and generally just annoying me.
damn dude :P RIP.

Within weeks times we'll see people posting threads on how they bricked their systems just to get the a9l.bin
Hell, I'm surprised I haven't seen any. The guide's been up for 2 days and a lot of people are trying it.
Don't quote me on this, but it seems like either the brick rate is low, or lots of people have hardmods.

Well most people that are trying the guide have a n3ds,2ds systems are the ones having issues sadly,I would try to downgrade to 2.1 trying the emunand downgrade, backup and relink to sysnand option but I have games that I don't want to lose and an only 2ds system. If I want faster boot times I'll try that new cfw boot program that supposedly shave a second off the boot time.

So to clarify, I have 9.5 emuNAND on my n3ds, just installed reinand which autoboots through ctrbootmanager. Though I updated the NVER so I could access the eshop back when no CFWs supported 9.6+ on the n3DS. I want to update my emuNAND to 10.5 so I can access the eshop and buy fates, all I need to do is update via the system settings, right?

Also what's this arm9loaderhax that people are talking about? Some new coldbooting thing?

Yeah updating normally via system settings is fine as usual. :)

Just make sure you're in emuNAND first and then go to system settings (or verify emuNAND here with the Rei string), then go straight to update. Do not leave system settings once you're in it. If you're worried about it, use emunand9 tool or n1ghty's Windows tool to make a backup of your emuNAND before updating.

ARM9LoaderHax is tough to explain in a short fashion, but to put it simply, it boots at a level even lower than MenuHax (it starts before FIRM is even booted), so you get 100% boot rates booting into emuNAND or sig-patched sysNAND. It's pretty much like this: power -> bootrom executes -> arm9loaderhax -> boot CFW (sysNAND or emuNAND), instead of this: power -> bootrom -> FIRM -> system stuff -> home menu -> menuhax -> boot manager (if applicable) -> CFW (which might fail here).

Hah, no worries about making sure I'm in emuNAND. I've got backups on both dropbox and MEGA :P. I know well enough to check the string! it's just my first time using reinand since rxtools is a pain to use, and I knew it required sourcing 0x15 and 0x16 keys to update. Which wouldn't be that hard mind, but still.

And that sounds very interesting, but you have to dump your console's OTP right? so hardmod only with a n3ds.

I'll survive without methinks. Still cool though.

A9LH actually doesn't need a hardmod, but it's very risky unless you're following the guide in the tutorial section. If you can follow directions and operate a hex editor decently, you can do it fine, but just make sure you have at least one sysnand backup handy in case you do brick.

*PMs furiously*

Ahem, anyway, I managed to get my OTP as well. I'm beginning to want to try the arm9loaderhax installer to coldboot Reinand..

Edit: I took the plunge. Glorious Reinand emuNAND on a9lh.

Risked a soft mod or did you hard mod it? Lol

Though I doubt what I am about to say
What if the safer method they have to get the OTP file uses the emunand only, because they found a way for 2.1 to actually boot in emunand

I did it with no hardmod.

That's not possible, because the OTP is locked by the time emuNAND boots. The benefit of using a CFW that can boot 2.1 emuNAND is to check your work. If it works on emuNAND, there's a very high chance it will work safely on sysNAND. None currently boot 2.1 though, so even if you take a few cautionary steps like the ones Aurora Wright suggested in the OTP thread, you're still going in blind.

Was this on a n3ds or o3ds? I am considering a soft mod attempt just to do it. I do have copies of all my nands so I should be safe.
What are the pros to doing this? Just getting cfw and unsigned codes to run before everything else rather than last? Essential a true cold boot?

So now you Directly boot into emunand?

N3DS, since Reinand official runs only on N3DS.

Pros:
  • 100% boot rate (also cleaner since it doesn't have to bother booting up stuff from the sysNAND, crash it, then turn around and boot into emuNAND, it just boots emuNAND directly)
  • ~8 second boot time into emuNAND, versus ~20 or so via MenuHax
  • Super Stable 3D works out of the box with no need for lid trickery
Cons:
  • Obvious brick risk if you mess up or the flashing doesn't work right
  • You can't use sysNAND again for now, until something like a boot manager is released (or unless you restore a NAND backup from before installing A9LH, but without graphics capabilities right now, that's tricky)
