They're both very similar. I don't see how you can miss that. Yes, they're different in a lot of ways...but we're talking about making a comparison. Sonic and Mario are similar games - yet very different.
They're not even in the same genre; Drone Tactics is a Super Robot Wars-style strategy-RPG, while Advance Wars isn't an RPG at all.
The key features of Advance Wars-style wargames are faceless expendable units that can be contructed, resource points that produce resources that are spent to build new units during battle, factories where units are constructed that must be captured, a very small number of units which are generally used identically by all sides, each stage essentially 'self-contained', no RPG features, no detailed unit stats, heavily simplified combat mechanics, etc.
Super Robot Wars games are Strategy RPGs (and as such, they feature detailed unit stats, extensive RPG levelling system, unit customization outside of battle, etc). For the most part, they have generally-unique units that fall into only broad categories together, individual pilots representing every single unit, units deployed from a carrier at the start of battle, options for response type when your units are attacked, a heavy focus on evasion as an alternate strategy to defense, and countless other similarities. This game is basically a Super Robot Wars title with the sprites and dialog changed.
The only reason I can see for comparing it to Advance Wars is if that's the only other turn-based strategy game you've ever played; they are as far apart from each other as it's possible for two turn-based strategy games to be while still looking superficially alike.
