What is your system running on now? ie; 4.1, 4.2?
You can check in Wii Settings in the top right corner.

I have kept mine at 4.2U and have been told that the updates are useless after 4.1.

I personally wouldn't update, But thats just me.

Like I said before, I have heard that updates are useless after 4.1, and this could be due to updates after 4.1 could just be patches to keep people from running homebrew software.

I don't know that for a fact, just what I suspect, and why I keep mine at 4.2U.

If you have all your IOS's Trucha'd you could possibly be safe though. Here is my SysCheck.csv just to show you an example:

But I wouldn't try to duplicate it, It was hard to get it that way, and I semi-bricked it half way through. Luckily I recovered.

As I suspected, updates after 4.1 include patches to prevent and remove 'unauthorized files'.
At: http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2522/~/system-menu-update-history

Latest System Update and System Feature Update:
  • September 7, 2010
    Improvements to Wii Menu 4.3
    • Behind the scenes enhancements that do not affect any prominently-used features or menus but will improve system performance.
    • Because unauthorized channels or firmware may impair game play or the Wii console, updating to Wii Menu version 4.3 will check for and automatically remove such unauthorized files.
Previous Nintendo Wii System Updates and System Feature Updates:
    • June 21, 2010
      Wii Menu 4.3

      Included in this update:
      • Behind the scenes enhancements that do not affect any prominently-used features or menus but will improve system performance.
      • Because unauthorized channels or firmware may impair game play or the Wii console, updating to Wii Menu version 4.3 will check for and automatically remove such unauthorized files.
  • September 28, 2009
    Wii Menu 4.2

    Included in this update:
    • Behind the scenes enhancements that do not affect any prominently-used features or menus but will improve system performance.
    • Because unauthorized channels or firmware may impair game play or the Wii console, updating to Wii Menu version 4.2 will check for and automatically remove such unauthorized files.
So unless you are experiencing difficulties with any apps or games you should be alright not updating.

Install Priiloader and backup your nand using Bootmii.
Priiloader will block all requests to update. Bootmii will act as a safe backup option.
If you are going to update do it through Mod Mii, never update from Nintendo online or the disks.

There are a number of good guides on how to update/mod a Wii. I prefer the one by MauiFrog, but it's located on a different website. As with anything, always make sure to backup your files and NAND first.

What does this even mean?
The risk is in updating it (from disc or Nintendo servers).
I swear that you work for Nintendo and want people to brick their consoles.
