Do you intend to use it's extra power for anything that would justify the price? This isn't just limited to the exclusive games like that Fire Emblem game or Xenoblade 3D, but to other games that take advantage of the stronger hardware like Pokemon USUM, Hyrule Warriors Legends, and so on.
If you don't really care about lower framerates, or having a built in circle pad pro (very rarely have I ever really wanted to use one for anything that wasn't Quake 2), just go with/stick with a 3DS XL. Similar screen size for a cheaper price if I remember correctly.
It really depends on what you want. Do you like having the latest stuff? Then buy it. Are you going to be playing the exclusive games? Buy it. Want better performance in supported games? Buy it. Play Smash? Buy it (that C-stick really helps). This is probably only a small group of people who would actually want it.
However, this is GBAtemp, so there is one last question that must be asked. Are you going to be using homebrew? Homebrew is way better on a New 3DS since devs take advantage of that extra horsepower. Among other things, emulators run better (notably GBA, SNES, and anything more demanding), some apps are just faster, and you can get more features with a New 3DS (like NTR streaming). If you are really big on homebrew, then definitely invest in a New 3DS.
Just from what I've read it sounds like a N3dsXL is going to be a good fit for you. Myself I do enjoy the better CPU power the N3ds offers. The XL screen some find pixally but I like it myself. Yes its a bit bigger but I find it still a decent size for portability when I take mine with me.Homebrew is one of the reasons yes
