So apparently lots of LP'ers have picked up this very short and very scary horror game. We can definitely thank 4chan's /v/ and Reddit for popularizing the game in just under a month.

Based off a creepypasta with a similar title (SCP-087,) it's a rather short and fun scary game to play around with. Using procedural events, it plays similar to Diablo, in the sense that no two playthrough's are ever the same, neither in the floors you see nor any "close encounters" you experience.

The premise is that you're asked to descend floors in a seemingly endless stairway.

While the game is still in its beta stage, the current version is nothing short of amazingly scary, and brings something to mind about horror games:

This is how ALL horror games should be. A short and simple backstory, simple controls that don't require any pop-ups to tell you how to do shit (eyeing Egoraptor's Sequelitis,) a clever use of audio and lighting, and most importantly, a big amount of replay value, even with this kind of minimalism to it. Makes you wish horror games didn't need to be so complex and involving to be scary.

Interested in playing?

Check the video description, it has download links to the latest version there. The game is freeware, so redistribution should be alright as long as you credit the author.

Enjoy!

I like the execution - the graphic engine looks interesting and brings back memories of The Calling for the Wii or Penumbra on the PC. The idea reminds me of LSD for the PSX... however I find it slightly disappointing that it took whole 11 minutes to encounter the first "thing". :P

A more "diverse" levels would be in place too - I mean, imagine the staircase is "blocked" so you have to go through an actual "stage" to get to the other staircase and proceed - that'd liven things up.

Overall though, quite impressive for a creepypasta game.

If you've read the creepypasta itself, it would appear that future versions may contain the scenarios presented in the SCP-087 document (ergo, the crying girl, perhaps playing as the different characters who descend, etc.)

Sounds promising then. :) I *really* like games like this, I'll definatelly play it if something more... uhm... "complex" sprouts out of it, right now it seems more like a gimmick then a full-blown game. It is promising though! :D

EDIT: Let's all agree to never be creative again.

Played this with a friend last night at like...4 in the morning on a 46in TV. Scared the shit out of us...I was thinking about adding a sprint option in the game so it doesn't take a year and a half to reach the bottom, maybe even give you a chance to live and continue onward. Was also thinking of adding the Audio of the little girl in there as well...

So what's this game about? :3 I'm a big fan of Amnesia so I hope this isn't Japanese horror?
It's not Japanese horror.

It's a game based off of this mythical creature. Where the video picks up from is where the game starts from. No menus or cutscenes or story bits. Just you and the dark staircase.

....Be right back. Need new pants.

Having read the SCP entry, I can't imagine what the game mechanic would be, since all everyone involved does is climb down stairs and then scream and die (Stairwell Descent Simulator 3000, Featuring Floating Face Of Doom?)... and I'm too scared to play it and find out :ha:

It looks interesting enough, but since my laptop can't play games (or hold a charge) for its life, I'll just have to appreciate it from the sidelines.

Or when your player dies, you can say in code, if enemy exists, do nothing, but if enemy does not exist, then create enemy at certain spot. (This would be a pain tho for lots of emeies)

Easiest, simple way would be just restart scene, but player would restart from beginning.
