I'm really terrified about modding my PS3. I love it, and I would really have a big gap in my life if I bricked it some how.

Thing is, I'd love to recover all my PSN games that I lost before...ya know.

I'm just so paranoid I'm going to break my PS3. Is there any way it could royally screw up my PS3? And, if there is, is there ANY type of recovery from my screw up?

I don't really play online that much...so, should I just completely turn online OFF until I need it?

I've read you can install your PSN titles and then go back to the OFW...maybe I'll just do that...

Can someone who knows the technology behind this make me feel a bit better about doing it?

Stick to 3.41 JB for now. The stable CFW will be on way but its slow due to Sony vs Geohot right now. Patience is a virtue.

Alright, so, lets say I've got my PS3 modded with the Geohot mod, and I have my backups.

Do I just drop them on the USB and choose install from the PSes home menu?

Thanks for the reassurance.

It's not that easy playing backups on Geohots 3.55 CFW yet. You can't run them off external yet, only the internal, by modifying the eboot.bin and packing it along with some other of the games files into a .pkg, which you can install and run the game as a PSN game from the XMB. This method doesn't work for all games yet either, I'll be making a detailed guide with pictures within the next day or so.

I specifically meant PSN titles. I don't plan on playing backups of disc games in the foreseeable future (although it would be very nice to have the option later on.)

I would say just be patient until everything is pretty much standardized. In the very near future I see multiple releases for games for different firmwares until everything gets ironed out.

O'd say that it's wise to wait, too. I don't own a PS3, but I do own a Wii and a 360. There have been a number of occasions where I wondered what I should do. In all of those cases I opted to wait, and in all of those cases I was right. The last thing you want is a visit by Captain Hindsight.

If sony is able to find a fix they will ban every console out there... i need encouragement...
Who cares? If they did decide to ban everyone and "disable" your ps3 like they say they can I guarantee that people will create their own network just for modified ps3's. It would be kinda cool to have it that way too. It'll be more like steam.

What? I think you may be thinking of tunneling programs that only work with LAN games. I have yet to see a "network" that can either emulate Live or Nintendo's WFC.

Here, I'll make you all feel better. Sony can't (legally) do anything to you until all the legal nonsense with Geohot is decided on and done with. So until a judgment is made you have nothing to worry about.

they still have the right to ban the system from PSN regardless of what happens in the case
your using their online system (PSN) to go online and play games or use their store

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

  • cearp @ cearp:
@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
