    It never saves my data for my gba games!

    I got through 6 visions in klonoa and paused, went to main menu, and my data was gone!

    GBA games that use EEPROM or Flash save types need to be patched so that they can save to the SRAM in the 3-in-1.

    Use GBATA.

    Is it necessary back up to .SAV or is that just something extra that isn't needed to save.

    You should sometimes back up your .sav, but it does that automatically.

    GBATA is needed for patching the games in order for them to save correctly.
