Nintendo is finally set to release a new, much more powerful console with HD graphics, and many are wondering what kind of technology we might find inside the console, and how it will compare with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. We’ve heard from developers who have access to the console that the Wii U is “50% more powerful” than the Xbox 360 and PS3. We now know that those estimates of 50% are based on the fact that the Wii U is around 50% more powerful on paper, according to information Wii U Daily obtained from a Japanese developer who is currently working on porting a PS3 game to the Wii U.

According to the source, the Wii U specs are:
  • Quad Core, 3 GHz PowerPC-based 45nm CPU, very similar to the Xbox 360 chip.
  • 768 MB of DRAM “embedded” with the CPU, and shared between CPU and GPU
  • Unknown, 40nm ATI-based GPU
The source also mentions that Nintendo has been testing two versions of the console, one with 768 MB of RAM, and one with 1 GB. The RAM is also made by IBM and is embedded with the processor on the same die/silicon, which results in more bandwidth.

These were the specs that Nintendo showed developers around March 2011, so it’s unknown how close to the final specs these are, considering there’s a year until the console is scheduled for release.

When it was unveiled earlier this year, Nintendo confirmed that the Wii U would support 1080p graphics and 3D is possible as well

We know the Wii U is using IBM's Power7 chips because IBM comfirmed that some time ago, but what in the world.....768 MB of DRAM embedded with the CPU, is that even possible, let alone very very very expensive. o_o!!!

They are testing two versions, the other has 1GB embedded dram.

A rumour is a rumour so yeah, take it with a pitch of salt. =P

It should be obvious that these specs are a load of bullshit. I wouldn't be surprised if the WiiU Daily blog made it up to drive up traffic.

Even if it's not fake, Nintendo said they'll show the "final" Wii U at e3, so those specs are not final.

Just base on the fact that this seem like to much of a info leak , I'm calling fake.

Not really, over on Neogaf, they have a good insight of the wii U.

Inside information says the dev kits are around of 2GB ram, IBM on their twitter said the Wii U will be using the a version of power7 architecture, power7 can be from 4, 6 up to 8 cores, But inside info says it has 4 cores and so this rumour is on par, supposedly there's a lot of Dram, this rumour is way over the top with the dram. The GPU has had a lot of changes since early devkits according to inside leaks, it's heavily modified off older versions of radeon series.

This isn't unbelievable. It's about in line with what we've heard so far.

But it's still a rumour.

Edit: Guys, don't forget that eDRAM is a feature of POWER7 and is in fact used by many gaming devices nowadays.

A concern of mine is that they state the RAM is shared between the CPU and GPU... which doesn't sound right.

Home computers can share system RAM to the GPU, but the GPU still needs some of it's own, and that's because hardware configurations are variable, whereas consoles are generally static, so why change RAM allocation? And if it also functions as system RAM then it's not dedicated GPU RAM, which means it's often (way) slower for the GPU to access than RAM the GPU has for itself alone.

its ancient because it's still ATi, even though AMD officially renamed the line to AMD Radeon devices.
The renaming to AMD only happened with the HD 6 series, which are (of this post) the latest line.

Rydian, that's a valid concern. A more valid concern is that we in no way have the technology to get 769MB of eDRAM into one processor, let alone a cheap consumer grade video game console. If wikipedia is to be trusted, POWER7 has a maximum of 32MB of eDRAM. And that's for it's maximum core models.

Considering Ninty's previous dedication to making low-power consoles, I would be rather surprised if they went with the old 40nm process, let alone 45nm.

Dude only compared to Wii > xb360 > PS3

All previous consoles were always top of the bill when it came to sound and graphics.
Wii was the only console with less power con=mpaired to the rest.

Interesting, but the eDRAM is bull. Also do note that although the Power7 processors are available at 4, 6 and 8 cores, nothing prevents them from shutting down a core or two (this is actually quite popular, ie. 3 core processors). Actually making a quad core processor and using the 3 core ones makes quite cheap parts since normally the 3 core ones can't be used, since a quad isn't a quad with 3 cores. What the specs are in the end, we'll see, but so far I just want to see games running on it to make a valid purchase..
