Grand Theft Auto V, probably the most anticipated title of the year (Gahars' Note: Not counting Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F, of course) will be released officially released next week. So, naturally, the marketing campaign has reached full swing. TV spots, billboard ads, and... an entire social network.

Rockstar: Because why the hell not?

Today, the GTA developer launched a social networking website for the inhabitants of Los Santos and Blaine County, the fictional locales within the world of Grand Theft Auto.

The Facebook-like website, called Lifeinvader, blurs the lines between fiction and reality by allowing real-life players to join the network and stalk their favorite in-game characters.

Once the game is released, it'll be interesting to see what Rockstar has planned for the social network. But even in its infancy, it's possible to catch glimpses of the developers' intentions. Sprunk, for instance, is promising free cans of a Sprite-like beverage from "any participating vending machine" if you follow the company on Lifeinvader. And Warstock Cache & Carry will give you a ten percent discount on your first purchase. Assuming that these advertisements really do translate into in-game discounts, Rockstar may have just discovered the most distractive combination in history.

Really, I think "Personal Space Invader" would be a better title, but that's neither here nor there.

You can sign up the service right here, if you so desire. It's also connected to their Social Club service, so you'll have to connect the two accounts. Just an FYI.

I appreciate Rockstar trying to make their games as "lifelike" as possible, but it's getting a tad bit ridiculous here. At this rate, GTA VI will just be a handgun and a note that reads, "Go wild, have fun, and fuck the American Dream." (It'll still receive 10/10s and win every GOTY award, of course.)

It'd be cool if the PC version could connect to this website via Steam's browswer :P (supposing it all works out that way with a port)
