[RELEASE] Trails in the Sky FC Evolution English Patch

2awXyXE.png

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (英雄伝説VI 空の軌跡) is a Japanese role-playing video game developed by Nihon Falcom. It is commonly referred to as Trails in the Sky First Chapter (英雄伝説 空の軌跡FC) to distinguish itself from the rest of the games in the Trails in the Sky series. The game is the first game in trilogy of titles, which also includes Trails in the Sky Second Chapter and Trails in the Sky the 3rd, and collectively, the titles create the sixth entry in the larger The Legend of Heroes series of video games.

A redesigned version of the game titled The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC Evolution was released in Japan for the PlayStation Vita on June 11, 2015. Evolution renovated the old designs and user interface and incorporated several new features such as voice acting and animation in scenes, additional illustrations, and enhanced battle tactics.

About
This patch provides a full English patch for Trails in the Sky FC Evolution (known as Sora no Kiseki FC Evolution in Japan). It applies the XSEED translation from the PC version of Trails in the Sky (with Evolution-exclusive content translated by our team). This patch would not exist without XSEED's translation; please buy the original game to support them: [Steam] [GOG] [Humble]. Compared to the original Trails in the Sky, the Evolution version includes the following changes:
  • Fully voiced story, with over 30,000 voiced lines
  • Redone artwork with more character portraits and event images
  • Arranged soundtrack
  • Text backlog
  • Hold X to speed up battles animations, cutscenes by 4x
  • Greatly improved text font
  • UI improvements

Known Issues
  • Text will sometimes overflow slightly past the text box (but it should never go off screen and be unreadable).
  • DLC is now supported with rePatch, but some item names and descriptions may still be in Japanese.
If you find any other bugs, please email them to Snigs at snkfcevo (dot) eng (at) gmail (dot) com, and we will probably update the patch as we work on the other games.

System Requirements
To run this translation patch, you need:
  • A PlayStation Vita or PlayStation TV running firmware version 3.60 or lower. For Vitas, buying from eBay is a good way to ensure that the version is 3.60 or lower and capable of running Henkaku, although they can be more expensive. For PSTVs, buying new on US Amazon seems to guarantee a firmware version below 3.60 and they are quite cheap at the moment.
  • A Japanese copy of Sora no Kiseki FC Evolution; physical or digital will work. It must be the Japanese version of the game, and it must be updated to the latest patch, version 1.02.
Installation (with rePatch)
Two files need to be patched: eboot.bin and data.psarc. Please ensure that your Japanese copy of Trails in the Sky FC Evolution is patched to v1.02, the latest version. The translation patch only supports the latest version.
  1. Install and enable the latest version of rePatch (2.71 alpha or later) if you do not have it already (instructions here)
  2. Download the translation patch from the link below.
  3. If you have the physical version of the game, you may optionally use NoNpDrm to rip the game to your Vita so that the game card isn't needed to play the game (instructions here).
  4. Use FAGDec (download here) and do the following steps to generate a decrypted eboot.bin:
Now run FAG Dec, select the desided game using X button and then press X button again on DECRYPT ALL(DONE). Press O to get back to main menu and press START button and select START DECRYPT(SELF) to start decrypting.
  5. In VitaShell, copy the following files to your computer:
ux:0/FAGDec/patch/PCSG00488/eboot.bin (if you are missing this file, make sure you installed the latest game patch, v1.02, from PSN before running FAGDec)
  6. You will need to obtain a decrypted copy of the data.psarc file. Browse to ux0:app/PCSG00488 (for digital) or gro0:app/PCSG00488 (for physical).
  7. Press triangle, select Open decrypted. Press SELECT to open FTP server (switch it under START key if you have USB connection chosen). You must transfer over FTP, I've confirmed transferring over USB doesn't work and still gets the encrypted file.
  8. Using FTP client on PC, connect to vita, then copy either ux0:/app/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc (for digital) or gro0:/app/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc (for physical) to your PC.
  9. If you've followed every step correctly so far, you should now have a decrypted eboot.bin and data.psarc on your PC, ready to patch.
  10. Use xdelta to patch eboot.bin. Use the following settings under Apply Patch:
Patch: eboot-originalbgm.bin or eboot-evolutionbgm.bin from the downloaded patch, depending on which soundtrack you want the patched game to use. See the FAQ below for more information.
Source File: eboot.bin copied from your Vita.
Output File: anywhere, use eboot.bin for the filename.
  11. Use xdelta to patch data.psarc. Use the following settings under Apply Patch:
Patch: data.psarc.xdelta from the downloaded patch.
Source File: data.psarc copied from your Vita.
Output File: anywhere, use data.psarc for the filename.
  12. Copy the newly patched data.psarc and eboot.bin to the following locations:
    ux0:rePatch/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc
    ux0:rePatch/PCSG00488/eboot.bin
  13. Close VitaShell and run the game.

Two files need to be patched: eboot.bin and data.psarc. Please ensure that your Japanese copy of Trails in the Sky FC Evolution is patched to v1.02, the latest version. The translation patch only supports the latest version.
  1. Download the patch from the link below.
  2. Connect the Vita to your PC via USB.
  3. You will need to use MaiDumpTool to dump and install the game in the following steps.
  4. In Mai, select Extract/Decrypt content - [PCSG00488][英雄伝説 空の軌跡FC Evolution] - Extract the game and decrypt eboot (incl. suprx). This may take around 15 minutes or so.
  5. In Mai, select Extract/Decrypt content - [PCSG00488][英雄伝説 空の軌跡FC Evolution] - Extract game patch and eboot (including suprx). This may take a couple of minutes.
  6. Return to the home menu and delete the game (back up save data first if necessary).
  7. In Mai, Install game from folder - PCSG0048.
  8. In Mai, Install patch from folder - PCSG00488_patch. Sometimes this process ends in a failure message, but it seems like it can be ignored safely.
  9. With the digital copy of the game installed, open VitaShell and copy the following files to your PC:
    ux0:app/PCSG00488/eboot.bin
    ux0:app/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc
  10. Use xdelta to patch eboot.bin. Use the following settings under Apply Patch:
Patch: eboot-originalbgm.bin.xdelta or eboot-evolutionbgm.bin.xdelta from the downloaded patch, depending on which soundtrack you want the patched game to use.
  12. Copy the newly patched data.psarc from your PC back to ux0:app/PCSG0488/gamedata/, overriding the existing data.psarc. Copy the newly patched eboot.bin from your PC back to ux0:app/PCSG00488/, overriding the existing eboot.bin.
  13. Close VitaShell and run the game.

FAQs
  • I get an error when trying to launch the game!
Make sure that your original game is the Japanese version of Trails in the Sky Evolution, and that it's updated to version 1.02.
  • Will you work on Trails in the Sky SC Evolution or Trails in the Sky the 3rd Evolution?
Yes, they are planned eventually, but keep in mind that FC took over six months to complete. It's possible SC and 3rd won't require as much time as FC, but there's no way to tell for sure.
Update: SC is now released (http://gbatemp.net/threads/release-trails-in-the-sky-sc-evolution-english-patch.495971/#post-7819736)
  • Will you work on Trails to Zero (Zero no Kiseki) Evolution and Trails to Azure (Ao no Kiseki) Evolution?
Only if XSEED releases them on PC first. Again, please buy the Trails games on PC to support them and make that more likely.
  • Should I use the Original soundtrack or the Evolution soundtrack?
I believe that the original soundtrack is superior overall, based on what I've heard myself and from what I've read online. For newcomers to the series, I highly recommend selecting the original soundtrack. For those that have played the PSP or PC version before, the Evolution version is worth trying if you want a fresh take on the soundtrack; some people do prefer it, and there are some Evolution tracks that I prefer over the originals myself. You can switch eboot.bin at any time to switch the game soundtrack, so feel free to experiment.
  • My save files disappeared and I can't save the game.
This is a known issue with dumped games on the Vita, where you can't save after leaving the Vita on sleep for a while and then resuming. Follow these steps in order to fix.
  • Can I swap the X and O buttons (X to confirm, O to cancel)?
    Try this homebrew: https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-button-swap-plugin-for-taihen.453829/

Edit: Forgot to ask... How do I revert the Fagdec Eboot to a mai Eboot?

as an example in this tread https://gbatemp.net/threads/miracle-girls-festival-408p-544p-resolution-edit.511501/

the original resolution hack uses the maidump offsets, when he ported it to Fagdec eboot,he subtracts 0x1000 in the maidump offset to get the Fagdec offset without manually searching for hose values, so if we reverse this process you would add 0x1000 to get the right offset for maidump. This might be similar to most modified contents so you still have to check manually to confirm. It's just a matter of comparing the modified and unmodified eboot (elf) taking notes of those offset and double checking with the add 0x1000 method. For the values that does not match you'll just have to search for it.

well where getting off track with the current topic of this thread, so porting it to maidump can be a topic on another day on its own thread when that day comes.

SLOT0 is my failed attempt to unlock all Extra features
SLOT9 is made without my failed attempt to unlock all Extra features

Also, the save structure goes like this:

BONDING EVENT 2
BONDING EVENT 2
(blank)
BONDING EVENT 3
BONDING EVENT 3
(blank)
CLEAR DATA

Good luck all, have a nice day. :-)

Heya Sabil, could you please explain a little bit how I can use your saves in my Zero Evo? I tried just replacing whatever I had in my save file folder of the game with what you provided but it ended up messing up my game and I had to reinstall it. To be clear I only have the downloaded english version and I only used vitashell to switch the insides of the folders, but like I said it didnt work out, tho I am not sure what I did wrong, any guidance would be nice, thanks :) Also if you can write me to my pm, I dont know how to pm someone here o.O Thanks

Thanks to warheit for catching that typo -- I corrected the instructions in the first post. Both patched files should go in ux0:rePatch, whether you are using the physical or digital copy, and rePatch is the only folder they should be moved to. The files in ux0:app shouldn't be modified at all (sorry about my typo in the instructions earlier).

eboot.bin contains a lot of the system text, like the text "System data is automatically saved" when you first boot the game, the tutorial text in battles, the menus when you pause the game, and other miscellaneous text. data.psarc contains almost everything else, including the main story dialogue. If you've patched everything correctly you should have a complete English translation (except for DLC items as was recently reported).

If you are getting the error "xdelta3: target window checksum mismatch: XD3_INVALID_INPUT" when trying to patch the data.psarc, make sure you copied the decrypted data.psarc from your Vita. You have to:
  1. Browse to ux0:app/PCSG00488 (for digital) or gro0:app/PCSG00488 (for physical)
  2. Press triangle, select Open decrypted
  3. Press SELECT to open FTP server (switch it under START key if you have USB connection chosen). You must transfer over FTP, I've confirmed transferring over USB doesn't work and still gets the encrypted file.
  4. Using FTP client on PC, connect to vita, then copy either ux0:/app/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc (for digital) or gro0:/app/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc (for physical) to your PC.

I can successfully patch the eboot.bin but not data.psarc. I'm using 3.65 enso. I have the latest 1.94 Vitashell. At step 2 (above) when I press triangle the open decrypted option at the top of the menu is grayed out (not selectable). I've tried everything, eg. I highlight the data.psarc file, but there is no way I can select this option. I transferred the data.psarc file via ftp anyway, but xdelta displays the unsurprising message the file is not suitable for the patch.

Any ideas?

"make sure you copied the decrypted data.psarc from your Vita"

You need to dump that using mai or any other means and then apply the patch on the decrypted data.psarc

you have to press triangle with the cursor on the game folder inside ux0:app not inside the folder itself, this way the folder will be open decrypted and you can extract the data.psarc. Keep in mind that the file must be extracted using ftp activating the ftp connection while you're inside the gamedata folder otherwhise you'll get the encrypted file. I know that ftp is much slower but it's the only way to get the right file

Instead of denigrating the work of the OP you could learn how to use the new tool, maidump can cause lots of problems like savegame corruption due the partial decrypting while nonpdrm generates a perfect copy of the game, other than that on 3.68 mai just doesn't work (at least for me), and now that we have fagdec we can properly mod eboots. The only "issue" of nonpdrm is that it's a little more tricky to get the decrypted game assets but if you read the modding wiki you'll see that you have to extract the data.psarc file using the "open decrypted" command in vitashell and then transfer it to pc over FTP since ftp tasfer it's currently the sole method to get the decrypted file

Something i found is...if you create a new folder in the ux0: and after following step 6 copy the file(don't move it) and put it in the new folder created..the file will be decrypted and you can transfer it using usb connection. That way you don't have to deal with slow transfer.

TheCheater & Ifury:

Many thanks for your replies, embarrassing when one is caught out not following the instructions to the letter, I tried this on gamedata folder by not on the game ID itself :( .... and thanks for the USB tip, very useful

Hi! Can someone help me to solve this?

I have used the original eboot in order to receive the dlc objects. Then I saved.

Now I switch to the patched eboot and...well, the game says that it needs the dlcs in order to read the save data correctly.

So...I am forced to use the original eboot (partial english) as long as this problem continues. Does someone know if when that 'event dlc' (I suppose its one of that kind) Will I be able to use the patched eboot?

Or if theres a solution in order to read the dlcs with the patched eboot?

I suspect that the dlc item "dengeki premium limited grail locket" is the cause. But I dont know what it does.

If someone helped me I would be grateful!

I just tested and can confirm that the rePatch version works great. This is really fantastic - I never expected to be able to play the Evolution versions of these games in English. Thanks a bunch for putting in the extra work on these to port it over to the NoNpDrm version of the game.

What is the difference between this repatch and the patch we had before? Is it better? Can it read dlcs?
Content is exactly the same. The only difference is that this version supports NoNpDrm versions of the game, which is a more accurate 1:1 backup versus Mai dumps. the database summarized the differences/benefits of using that version in the FC Evo thread

Can i get some help on patching eboot.bin? Whenever I try to patch it it gives me a window checksum mismatch. I am able to get both data.psarc and data0.psarc working but I can't get it to work twice using the eboot.bin from FAGDec. I am running 3.68 h-encore. One thing that is different from the instructions is that the decrypted eboot.bin appears in ux0:FAGDec/app/PCSG00489 instead of ux0:FAGDec/patch/PCSG00489.

You're trying to patch the wrong eboot.bin. It's must come from the patch folder, which is where game updates are installed. As noted in the installation instructions:

In VitaShell, copy the following files to your computer:
ux:0/FAGDec/patch/PCSG00489/eboot.bin (if you are missing this file, make sure you installed the latest game patch, v1.02, from PSN before running FAGDec)

It sounds like you don't have the patch installed. Try installing it, then restarting the process from the FAGdec step.

Damn, thank you so much! I didn't realize you have to manually install the patch through livearea when turning on the game. I thought downloading from NPS already came with the latest patches. Question though, how do I change from evolution bgm to original bgm? Is it in the settings in game?, because I only see the evolution option available when I patched both data.psarc and data0.psarc.
