Update: Version 1.0.2 (Point(er) Fix Release) Released
  • Overall, not much has changed compared to the initial release. However:
  • Point(er) Fix Release v1.0.2 should make all codes work
    for all regions/versions/languages(?).
    • Documented in detail in updated DevNotes.
  • Side notes:
    • Compatibility yet to be tested/confirmed for regions other than EUR/USA.
    • Not sure if it was the EUR console/game set to a different language than mine
initially causing in-level codes not to work for the user that reported the issue
(& thus possibly also for others). I can't think of any other option though.
    • Version 1.0.1 skipped due to small differences between version 1.0.2.
See first post for more information and links (same links apply).

Feel free to give these updated cheats a tryout.
Any feedback is always welcome and appreciated.
Cheers!

I Can confirm they work

Found a problem with fireball tho
Example: I use the fireball mario cheat code at "Position A", now I moved to "Position B" and fireballs are being shot from A
Great, I'm glad they are finally working for you.

Regarding the Fire power-up change: does that happen consistently or did it happen only once? I've only ever seen it happen once with the initial & updated release codes. Switching to another power-up and switching back to the power-up quickly fixed the issue for me back then.

It only happens once for the duration of the level when I first activate the code. Works if I switch powerup or change level (with the fire power up)

Will you be working on any other titles maybe Luigi Mansion 1? :)
Sorry for the late reply, @omega59 (busy with release 1.0.2).
I'm not planning to at the moment, so I can't promise anything on that matter .

I've seen it before once, although I can't seem to be able to reproduce it again.
Can you list specific steps on how to reproduce?

Go to any level, L+Right for the cheat, you will hear power-down sound, fireballs will shoot from the place you activated the cheat from, in direction of player eyes

Not able to reproduce. It makes me wonder if there are other people who experience the exact same issue. Also, since all power-up codes are basically the same, you should experience this for other power-ups (f.e. Boomerang) too. Is this the case?

Is moonjump intended to work only when Infinite Jump is enabled?
No, should normally work straight out of the box.

You do make a good code tester though :D. Anyway, cheats can have a tendency to show unpredictable behavior. Because cheat code creators do not have access to the game code, they are not always able to predict random behavior.

If, by any chance, a cheat code doesn't seem to work, just as a test:
  • disable cheat(s)
  • save game
  • reload save file
  • re-enable cheat(s)
If you follow above steps, does it work as expected?

Ok so I installed it but the speed cheat isn't showing up and when I use the 5 shiny stars cheat the game crashes when the screen transitions. Also that cheat and the multijump cheat turn red as you enable them, The moon jump seems to not go as high as you want/the game allows before you hit a barrier of some sort. It does increase your jump but it's only like double most of the time. I have a european cartridge.
Edit: Even when I don't use the 5 shiny stars cheat or the multijump cheat the game frequently crashes. I've played 1 entire level and I've been trying for a while. I spent more time waiting for my 3ds, to boot up and for the game to load than that I spent being in the game.
If you jump off off a trampoline with moonjump code and there is no ceiling to stop you the console hardlocks and you have to hold the power button untill it force shutdowns. I can't pause the game or go to home menu. The screens froze and the music just kept going.

First of all, thanks for your feedback. It's been a while since I put these cheats together, so refreshing my memory while writing this reply ^_^.

A few questions trying to pinpoint the issue(s):
  • Did you install the latest cheat code release 1.1.0?
  • Do you use the Luma-Rosalina cheat engine (L+Down+Select) in order to view/enable/disable the cheats?
  • What version of Luma are you on?
  • In what level do the softlocks appear (in other words: what was the level you were playing/what cheats did you have enabled)?
    • If possible, try to describe very specific steps in order for me to reproduce any softlock/crash.
A few general remarks:
  • There are 2 speed cheats (being Increased Speed (Land) & Increased Speed (Underwater)) that should be listed in the latest release.
  • Regarding the Unlock All cheat code:
    • During my testing rounds back when I was working on these cheats, I found that the Unlock All (5 Shiny Stars) code should not be used with Citra (breaking the save file for unknown reasons, all other codes do work when using Citra).
    • Granted, there must be something I may have missed that results in this kind of behavior, although it is a unique code that didn't exist in any other cheat code releases for this game (not even in the game save editor) and thus can be considered experimental. I documented all steps I took to create this cheat in my Developer Notes.
    • Due to the Switch having taken over, the interest in developing cheat codes for the Nintendo 2DS/3DS has decreased somewhat, although I would kindly appreciate other cheat code creators to take a look at this cheat code and point me to any particular things I may have overlooked.
    • Despite the above, it should work stable when using the real handheld device, so I would like to know some more details from your side to try to understand why the Unlock All cheat code doesn't seem to work for you:
      • Did you enable the cheats (Keep) Open Closed Mystery Boxes and/or (Keep) Open Closed Toad Houses by any chance? I am aware that these cheats are prone to occasional crashes (despite being harmless to a save file). As a note for cheat code creators: Like any other cheat, steps I took to produce these cheats are also documented in my Developer Notes. Despite many testing rounds, I couldn't figure out what resulted in the crashes, so I still can use some help here.
      • As a test, have you tried using the cheat when starting a new save slot?
  • You can safely ignore the cheat codes turning red.
    • It doesn't mean the cheat codes won't work.
    • If I remember correctly, it's because the cheats check for the presence of certain addresses whether or not to apply the cheat and in certain cases (for example: when not in a level) when a particular address can not be found (and thus the cheat code doesn't continue to run), it turns red.
    • There are other cheat codes that may turn red as well. The ones you listed aren't the only ones, but again: you can safely ignore this.
  • Regarding the Moon Jump cheat code:
    • I wasn't able to reproduce the issue you encountered when doing a trampoline jump. In what level did you encounter that issue?
    • I intentionally set the value to only jump double as high. Tested quite a bit to find a good default balance for the cheat and not break the original game play entirely. However, feel free to change the value to any other value in order to be able to jump higher.
Here are the steps you should take to do that:
      • Open the text file containing the cheat codes for the game's region in any text editor on PC (for the European release, this would be 0004000000053F00.txt).
      • Below the [Moon Jump] line, find the line:
        D4000000 00110000
      • Change the hex value 00110000 to a higher value, like f.e. 00120000 (tip: don't go overboard with this, even a small change can instantly send the character to the highest heights of any level, possibly crashing the game). Try a few values to find a value that fits your needs.
        • Note that when using the CTRPluginFramework cheat engine, I suspect due to some timing differences between the cheat engines, the default value should be 00055000 (as described in the cheat note).
      • Overwrite the text file with the edited text file on the 2DS/3DS.
    • As an alternative, you can also use the Infinite Jump code. As long as you press the B button, the character keeps going up to any desired height, while also allowing the character to jump in mid-air.
  • I also own the European game cartridge, although it's still boxed since I use it as a decoration in my bedroom.

I installed 1.0.0 so that might be the problem.
I used the Luma-Rosalina cheat engine.
Luma 10.0.1 But I also have luma 9.1 with plugin loader if needed.
I enabled always star power, always flutter, always tail swipe, moon jump, infinite lives, infinite time and unlock everything. The crash happens randomly during a screen transition.
The game froze when I held B after jumping on one of the yellow trampolines. This was in the W-7 airship level. I had moon jump so my jump got increased but if you press and hold jump from one of the yellow trampolines you go really high already. I assume because the moonjump enhanced all my jumps by about 2x the height that made it break. I once managed to have the moonjump launch me up from a normal roll long jump. I don't know how I did it because usually the longjumps and rolling longjumps (or spinning if you enable always tail swipe or if you use a tanooki/statue leaf) don't go up with moonjumps (for me atleast). That time I flew really high up but the game didn't freeze. I was able to pause but because you can't leave a level in the air I waited and I fell back down 20 seconds later. I'll try 1.1.0 now and see if any of the bugs still occur.
Edit: I didn't use any of the unlock toad house cheats that say (keep) as I already have all of them unlocked. I had 4/5 stars on my original save so I didn't need to use the cheats that say (keep) in front of them

Ok so the new version has the speed cheats included but it still crashes randomly when the screen transitions. This isn't just 1 level because I tried a level I tried before with the same cheats and the 1st time it worked but the 2nd time it doesn't work. And then I join a different level and it doesn't work there either, but then I play the same level again another time and it works again, but if I die it crashes again. It doesn't freeze every time you enter X stage or do X thing but it randomly happens when you go from for example the middle of a level to the start/checkpoint, when entering/exiting a stage, going to a different world/special world, going to the main menu/file select/into a file.

  • I also did encounter a few random crashes afterwards during a screen transition (which may have to do with the transition check that's embedded and needed in the cheat codes), although for me it only occurred very rarely, so I didn't look into it any further.
  • Any particular level/cheat where you find it to happen most? If possible, try each cheat at a time and post the cheat combination you used when a crash occurred.
  • Also, a good tip: try not to enable too many cheats at once and occasionally disable any cheat codes that aren't of use anymore (f.e. disable Unlock All code when used successfully, ...).

Good job with these cheat codes! But I am wondering: is it possible to have a cheat code of invincibility to lava? Like the ability to walk on it, just like the one available for Wii Super Mario Galaxy 2, that cheat is awesome for exploring the level!

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
