So, long story short, I damaged the motherboard of my n3DS XL. I've more or less given up on recovering the hardware, so the details are pointless, to be frank.

So I'm turning my focus to the microSD. I bought Ultra Sun on the eShop, so the game and its data are currently in limbo on the microSD. I have a lot of pokémon from over 10 years of games locked in there, and I really don't want to lose them.

I have never used Homebrew or Custom Firmware before, so I have no actual backups or the NAND of the original console.

Here is what I DO have on-hand:
-The microSD Card in question, 64GB, encrypted to the dead console. Backed up to my PC.
-A 2DS XL, Firmware Version 11.13.0-45U
-My old friendcode on the 2DS XL's Friend List
-a 32 GB microSD encrypted to the 2DS XL, as well as a number of microSD cards currently not in use.
-a PC with internet access.

I've been told it's possible to do what I am looking for, but I have no idea where to start.

What would be the best course of action to get access to my old save?
Should I recover my NNID to the 2DS XL then Homebrew it?
Or should I start with Homebrewing the 2DS XL? Should I even recover my NNID?
Then, how do I go about decrypting the microSD, once I have CFW installed?

Take a look at https://gbatemp.net/threads/extract...ontents-with-ninfs.499994/page-6#post-8756556 . But other than that. your card is likely screwed from being able to get any data back at all.

If you have all the content of the old SD card and your old friend code (the one on the n3DS XL), you should be able to decrypt the content of the SD card using ninfs and the movable.sed of your old n3DS XL.

You can get your movable.sed from this site, it may work, and it costs nothing to try

Brutetforce Movable is requiring me to add their bot to the defunct console's Friend List. Another source told me I can use the 2DS instead of the bot. How do I do that?

Update: I currently have the 2DS XL running CFW, and have obtained the movable.sed for the dead console. I've just installed WinFSP and ninfs to my PC via links provided by lone_wolf323 and eveldee.

Having some trouble with extracting the Ultra Sun game and its saves from the dead console's microSD, but hopefully I can figure it out through trial and error. The guide in ihaveamac's thread about ninfs is a bit vague, so I'm assuming there is a learning curve. I am getting to the mounting portion, but the filesystem is no easier to navigate than from the microSD directly. Tips would be appreciated.

I guess you may need a tool like this to extract the game save, I can't help you much on this one, I never tried to do something like this

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
