No, in fact the less you update your system the better the compatibility. DSi/3DS updates will try to block flash carts.

Thanks for replying guys! Really helpful! I was also wondering if this flashcart is a good one? I am planning to play pokemon and maybe other games too, do I get wifi access? To do GTS trading and wifi events and stuff?

the r4ids.cn or r4idsn.com ones are the only R4s we recommend, and yes you get wifi access for DS games.

Thanks man! Do you perhaps know how I get started? Like, when my flashcart arrives, is it ready to go? Or do I have to drag some files to it and so on.. If so, where do I get these files or w/e?
Does it come with instructions?
