I'm going to be setting up an o3DS as a present for a child, and I want to make it idiot-proof.
I was thinking of unplugging the wifi board, the 3ds will still work but if you turn on the wifi switch you get a black screen (I think).
Do you guys think this is the best way?
I'm also going to delete system settings (at least test to see if the system runs fine without it, I'm sure it will).
If I remove eshop and system settings, will that stop any update nags? How about just remoing the nim module?
I assume going into any in game dlc page will black screen/error - which I wouldn't like.

I'm simply going to install loads of games to it and then not see this 3ds for a while, maybe ever again. I'm not expecting anyone to install another game after me. I even thought about gluing the sd card slot closed. lol

Any advice? :)

I wouldn't close off options for him to that degree, or at least set it up so he can restore it once he's to the point where he knows what he's doing. Parental controls will also do what you want, though it wouldn't hard to crack a code like that, given enough time and patience.

ok well he won't be restoring (nand if you mean) and he won't be guessing any parental code, i won't set up that.
-- oh, i could set up a parental code to stop him from using wifi... yes? :) bingo. i didn't think of that. ok. thanks. i guess that is it lol.

i will set up homemenuhax, to some weird combination, because i won't want him to access the sysnand.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was going for. Gluing the SD card in there isn't a bad idea. This way, in ten years or whatever, it's still a whole handheld that can be updated and expanded to other games, especially nice if he/she ends up getting into collecting. Have fun and I hope he/she enjoys it.

Blocking parental controls for wifi and such makes a lot of child games require password. If you even just block the Internet browser a lot of games will need password. For instance I couldn't use oot or even a game such as are you smarter than a 5 grade student.

You sure you didn't set a rating restriction? I haven't had any issue with that on my end.

No only the Internet browser on my end stopped a lot of games working. I'm in the same boat as op. I've set up dummy wifi connections with dns blocked and that's about the best I can think of. They could even borrow a game from a friend with a update on the cart and ruin it.

yeah, i was hoping i could set a password only for wifi, but for anything else, the password is never needed.
even local play would be nice without the password but not needed.
no one near him will have a 3ds, no one will buy games, no one will probably know what it is. but i know he will enjoy it :)
the cias are all translated into his language so piracy is 'required' basically, well i could buy him all the carts and make him use hands but yeah...

then maybe disconnect the wifi chip, it's not hard to do :)
but i just 'worry' about it accidentally getting turned on mid game and the 3ds blackscreening.
the switch is not that easy to trigger to use though, so it might no be a problem

but parental controls can't stop wifi...? just wifi? really

By turning on Parental Controls, it blocks access to the WiFi settings by default. That should effectively stop him from mucking around online while still giving access to local multiplayer games.

Yeah the Internet parent control thing stopping some games is probably related to the local play games and games witch utilise online play. Bit of a bummer but I've warned then not to ever update or all your games will be gone.

I'm almost certain there was a system title in under 4.x consoles where you could stop wifi and it wouldn't stop games running. I believe Nintendo removed this function on purpose.

I haven't run into a single game that required me to enter my passcode to play. I have parental controls on to keep friends out of a couple of sensitive areas and to make sure the crappy 3D effect doesn't come on if I accidentally bump the slider. It does ask for a passcode to enable 3D, but I simply skip that and play it in 2D.

I have a console too like that but it was updated through sysupdater to 9.x and I can block updates with a pin. But my network updated ones won't do it. I've tried it setting up a 2ds for a 7 year. Anything I block makes certain games require pin

i don't really understand sorry, what system title? this is a bug you are talking about or a function?

Well. If it's exploitable. Use coldboot cfw. That way, he won't touch sysnand.
yes but there is still the possibility he will hold whatever hotkey i added to NOT load hax, when booting up, right? :) i will set to something weird like DOWN+B+L+X+SELECT. i hope he's not reading this :)

It was a official Nintendo system title and they removed it cause people could block the updates and no one would ever accidentally update anymore.

Yeah. Pretty much like that :)
But I prefer to be clear with the kid. I have a y.o little bro and I explained to him that he should not mess with the thing in an unwanted way, otherwise he would lose his precious thing. They can listen, you know.

ok, yeah it seems simply having parental controls will need a PIN to get into internet settings.
that is great, so wifi CANNOT be set up :)

http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/257
"Note:
When Parental Controls are enabled, some System Settings, such as Internet Settings, Outer Cameras, System Transfer, and System Update cannot be accessed. You will need to enter the PIN to access these features."

this is what @TecXero said i think, so great :)

and what about stopping update nags?
-- ah i won't have them because no wifi. so no real reason to delete system settings (i wouldn't care if i did it, i can always install it back)
thanks guys :)

You can turn the 3D restriction on or off, as well as almost all the other restrictions parental controls enforces, but there are still some areas of the system it limits access to which can be a minor annoyance.

You can block access to the wifi settings, but if you are worried about him accidentally updating, he can still do so by running a game that requires newer FW, and the 3DS will still connect automatically to nintendo zone hotspots.
You can set up the home wifi connection for him with tubehax DNS and restrict it with parental controls, that way he can still use the 3DS online at least at home without risking an update.
