Yeah. Pretty much like that :)
But I prefer to be clear with the kid. I have a y.o little bro and I explained to him that he should not mess with the thing in an unwanted way, otherwise he would lose his precious thing. They can listen, you know.
y.o = year old? (1 year old?) :O
yeah but i don't really speak his language (literally) and he won't understand the language of the 3ds, so i want to bullet proof this as much as i can :)

You can block access to the wifi settings, but if you are worried about him accidentally updating, he can still do so by running a game that requires newer FW, and the 3DS will still connect automatically to nintendo zone hotspots.
Oh yeah, I forgot about Nintendo Zone. I don't think we have any around here. Well there goes that solution.

i don't need to worry about nintendo zone hotspots in the country he is in lol :D but yes good point to keep in mind for some people
also no worry about games, hard to find :) thanks for the input though!

Do you have have ocarina of zelda. As a test set parental controls and see if that cart will run. If not install a cia of the game are you smarter than a 5 grader, as they are some games that required me to enter parental pin. There are many more games too. And I had no age restriction set just Internet browser disabled only. If they start ok you should be good.
This is on a network updated console but on my sysupdater from 4.x to 9.x console I don't get the same problem

if you are in the uk (from your flag) and 5th grader is a usa game, yes you will need to enter the code because out of region content does not work well with parental controls :)

Yeah there could be many different probabilities like this as the other guy here says he has no problem. I was only setting this 2ds up yesterday and I too was trying to block everything. This 2ds was downgraded to from 9.8 so that could be a factor too. I'm also direct booting to system nand with rxtools so using a lot of crypto fixed games too. I've get everything running fine through mset with 94 games running great for her. Never used themehax/menu hax either cause rthey would only need to change theme for it to go. And they have been told not to play ds games too remove mset.

I just tried out OoT3D. No issues here. I tried the cartridge and everything. I have an USA 3DS and an USA copy of OoT3D

3dbrew says after 4.1.08 they removed password for updates here I'm wondering if it's safe to revert back to those settings
https://3dbrew.org/wiki/Home_Menu
Scroll down to 4.1 change log

So instead of you removing system settings do you think you could go back to 4.0.7 settings. Home menu version 5131 @cearp

If this is the XL version I just took off the back plate and then the battery plate. Where you see the wifi switch, just pull it out and place the switch back but the slider is on the opposite end of the switch on the board. That way when the kid trys to move it it won't move. That is what I did after I setup one for my 5 year old niece.

ok i enabled parental controls and yes, fantastic i can't get into the internet settings now...
but... even though i disable the age restrictions for the games, the games that i installed (translated games, various regions) need me to input the pin because parental controls does not work well with out of region games (naturally nintendo didn't fix the issue!)
so, i can't use parental controls - i think i will delete the system settings app, and see how that goes.
