Hacking Question About 3DS Cartidge Updates and Saves

Hi, I've been lurking these threads for a while and learned the gist of how to use Gateway and Rxtools, but I have a question. I updated my Smash cartridge by doing the folowing:

• used Rxtools to update the emunand to 9.6 to update my Super Smash Bros. retail cartridge,
• reset the emunand to 4.2 using gateway
• updated the emunand back to 8.1 using my Smash cartridge.

Does anyone know a better way to do this? This would have also corrupted my save (which was already gone since I downgraded to 4.5), but is there a way to prevent my retail saves from being corrupted when I need to do this again? Thanks in advance if you can help.

Yeah, before you do any of that, back up your emuNAND with EmuNAND tool

Then after you're done with Rxtools don't reset emuNAND, just restore your backup

No save data lost
