smash uses all of the 3ds' power, so it has to unload the home menu, so when you press the button, you have to wait for it to load back.

If you are using an old3DS, the game actually runs in what's known as "high memory mode." Basically the system shuts down features in the background to allocate more memory to the game. This is why the system takes so long to boot into the game, show the homemenu, and reboots when closing the game.
New3DS does not have this issue as it has enough resources for these kinds of games.
