It does. But when you purchase it through PSN your account gets verified automatically, users who buy it used have to buy a pass though.

Does that mean people can't play online that pirate the game?

Yup. I just checked the PSN Store and you have to buy an "Online Entitlement" code for $14.99 for ModNation Racers PSP, $19.99 for SOCOM FTB 3 and $9.99 Patapon 3.
If people who pirated those games could play online the games would have a much bigger online community but alas, they don't.
Sega also did this with PSP2 even if the system didn't work at first since pirates COULD play online, of course it got fixed and now to play online one must have a Little Wing license.

Glad I grabbed Modnation Racers from the Welcome Back package. The online for that game, and that game as a whole, is pretty fantastic. I've never been a huge fan of the pass system, but it really isn't anything new.

You only need that if you pirated it or bought it used. Which I bet you did.

Online passes
Multiplayer DLC

Pick ONE, or I will never buy your game for multi-player purposes. I get it, people use your servers, you want the cash for it. However, I will either buy an online pass OR buy MP DLC for your game. Not both.

Starting with Resistance 3? Wasn't this already done with Mortal Kombat?

It wasn't a Sony game though. This is the first Sony game on the PS3 to use an online pass.

Even if I was a PS3 owner, I'm much more into single player games than multiplayer ones. There's not a whole lot on the multiplayer front anyway that interests me on the PS3.

Not everyone has spare money to keep buying new games, so if you can save some cash with an used one, why the hell not?

They should keep this kind of thing for "premium content" like exclusive crap (typical Bioware stuff). The backlash isn't as big as a forced Online Pass.

At first I was going to say "it doesn't really bother me." But now that I think about it, it kinda does.

Stores like Gamestop charge decent prices for used games, but more often than not, they're still pretty pricey - my friend's little brother bought Final Fantasy Tactics: WotL from them for $20, for example. Now that game doesn't have online multiplayer, but if it did, he'd have to pay an extra $10 to use the online play, with it totaling $30 plus tax. That's more expensive than buying the game new

Obviously it wouldn't apply in that situation because WotL lacks internet multiplayer, but what if it were Patapon 3? The price difference between used and new games is typically minute at Gamestop, so that $10 charge for playing online might push more people just to buy the game new....which, I guess, might be a win for Sony/EA, but still.

I don't play many PS3 games online, anyway, but I'll be damned if they do this with Vita, or if Nintendo starts doing something similar with the Wii/Wii U/3DS. No way in hell I'd buy Mario Kart 3DS used for $5 less from Amazon or something, only to pay an extra $10 for online play. I'd just buy it new.

Okay, I might

What? It's 20 bucks for War of the Lions USED?

WoTL is a PSP Favorites title. It's worth 10 dollars for a new copy at Walmart stores...

It was a while back, not too long after War of the Lions launched. I'm not sure how much it is now, but I doubt it's still that expensive.

Even if it did since it launched a while back you wouldn't have had to pay to play online if you bought it used.
And what has EA got to do with Patapon 3 again?

I'm aware - it was an example, which is why I said it wouldn't apply in that situation. I haven't purchased many PSP games since it's launch, and I don't buy multiplayer PSP games, so I was using the only one that I could recall that had local multiplayer as an example.

And Nothing, as far as I'm aware. EA was mentioned because they already do this - "The price difference between used and new games is typically minute at Gamestop, so that $10 charge for playing online might push more people just to buy the game new....which, I guess, might be a win for Sony/EA, but still." didn't refer to Patapon 3 exclusively, but to all games that might be resold published by EA and soon to be Sony.

well fuck you sony thats why i got a 360 (doesnt give a shit bout gold status a rip off may i add).....oh it only affects PSN anyway i jumped off the ps3 ban wagon a few months ago cause sony pisses me off they are doing more than "protecting their proprietary"

And here I am thinking why people don't complain about Microsoft's Xbox LIVE... Come on guys... It's an unlimited online pass for a single game and you only have to pay at most 15 dollars... :|

Except xbox live ranges from $3-$6 bucks a month and has benefits other than just playing games online. While the psn pass is $15 per game and affects the resale value of the game.

ea games are already doing it on 360
nfs hot pursuit came with an online activation code for example

I expect other companies like ubisoft to start doing it too
