. When someone says a console is dead, they mean that there's no more (interesting) games coming out for it.

The PS2 has a life left in it, no doubt about that. Does it have many years left? I doubt it, but at the moment it's not exactly on its death bed.

The sooner the PS2 dies the sooner Wii games are developed better.

I've never thought of it that way, that actually makes a lot of sense. Since most Wii games are crappy PS2 ports, once the PS2 is gone we shouldn't have to worry about that as much anymore.

The PS2 will most certainly last out for another year or so, I'd argue. There are still companies producing games for it and even here, popularity hasn't faltered too much. Plus, there are still quite a few games that haven't been localized to other countries yet, so that can definitely fuel the PS2 lifespan for a while. Besides, it's not like it's a completely obsolete console, either, seeing how it's both cheap and powerful (of course, not in relation to the next-generation consoles).

Exceptionally observant point about the relation to the Wii, though. To be completely honest, I hadn't really noticed that until you pointed it out. Oh, gawd~ XD

PS2 is not that yet, and might still "hang around" for some time thanks to the Wii.. lot's of Wii titles are getting PS2 ports, since the Wii is not much more powerful than the PS2 (well.. actually, it is.. but people insist in doing games for the Wii that probably a PSX could run

) then a port to PS2 becomes easy to do: "just take out the wiggly controls and you have a Ps2 game".. so, lot's of companies are doing that!

i think it's more of a case of they develop a PS2 game, then add the (poorly implemented) wiggly controls and you have a Wii game. but the only companies doing that sort of thing are the companies making shite games, anyway.

well, except Okami. but that really is a case of the controls being better suited to the Wii, rather than a half-arsed attempt to make a quick buck.

Well.. that is true to some games like "Ninjabread Man", "Anubis", and other shovelware.. but lot's of games are going the other way around, like Boogie.. i remember hearing that this was a Wii exclusive.. than it didn't sold as well as EA expected, so it got a PS2 port

A lot of games are being already launched for PS2 and Wii by the same time.. so, in some way I believe that the PS2 is holding down the Wii potential.. I mean, you can't make a Wii game with graphics better than the PS2 can support cause then a PS2 port would become too troublesome, I don't think the PS2 could make graphics like Super Mario Galaxy, and I also don't think that SMG is the Wii limit.. We'll probably really start too see better Wii games once the PS2 dies..

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought the problem with Wii games was too many family-oriented titles and not enough decent single players, not a lack of graphics. The PS2's library wipes the floor with the Wii's one on that point. I don't know much about the technology but if the PS2 dies then I reckon those single-player developers would move to the 360 rather than the Wii. It's just not the attitude that console has.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.
