Convert the PS1 games into EBOOT's using this guide: http://gbatemp.net/topic/206195-guide-to-converting-ps1-games-for-psp/
Follow it perfectly, and you won't have any problems. Remember to always drop the output folder holding the EBOOT into ms0:/PSP/Game.

Follow the link Snailface gave to boost your compatibility via popsloader.

You can rip your PS1 games to .iso with a pc and Alcohol, but in order to play them on your PSP you will need to convert them to eboots.

    Edit: double ninja'd
