Which is why nintendo (and Sony) really ramped up the security on their new hardware. A hack MAY still be possible, but not by any method used for older systems. It's not going to be something simple that someone stumbles upon whilst fiddling with their SD or browser or qr codes etc etc. If you don't trust what neimod has said, I don't know where else to turn. He's the only person I know of that's made any headway, and he said it won't be done by a software exploit.

Hi all. This is just a shot in the dark from someone who bows to those who are much more knowledgeable than herself.

Would it be possible to discover the certificate key for downloaded sd card content on a specific 3ds and spoof it onto a custom program? It seems like if a method for read / write could be achieved for this key then it could be passed to other 3ds consoles regardless of having unique keys.

Best wishes.

the 3ds eshop games are encrypted. in 3ds brew there is a program that can dehencrypt and encrypt them. each 3ds have a code that when it downloads a eshop game that code is in a part of the game.
So we can dehencrypt the game, erase that code and encrypt it and i think it will work in any 3ds.
please, answer me and sorry for my english im spanish

Reread the original quote please.
Only because you said please.

My point still stands.
No it doesn't. He said right there; encrypt. The private key is needed for that. You said it was "not necessarily needed". Which is wrong. For encryption (which he explicitly specified), it is necessarily needed.

He wasn't specifically talking about encryption.

No there isn't. That would require both the common key and the private key of the 3DS. We have neither.
Private key isn't necessarily needed.
To encrypt them, yeah it is.
To decrypt them, no it isn't.
Yeah you decrypted them nice.
But how are you going to re encypt them so they can be ran? It will be unsigned code if it's not signed with the private key...

Did we ever need the private key for the Wii or any other console?
No. But in those cases, "we" weren't trying to re-encrypt files, which this guy was specifically saying we should do.

He was making the (incorrect) assumption that what stops a 3DS ware game from working on other 3DS consoles is some piece of data embedded within the binary. His suggestion was decrypt the 3DS ware game, remove that piece of data, and re-encrypt the game, so that then it would work on any console. To try that, the private key WOULD be needed.

His suggestion was not one for running unsigned code (which does not require the private key, or technically even the common key, although it helps), but one for pirating 3DS ware games. Which would have to be encrypted again, because the 3DS cannot magically run decrypted 3DS ware games. (FYI, on the Wii, pirated VC and WW WADs are fakesigned, because we don't have the private key)

The purpose of his idea is to play pirated 3DS ware titles. For this you don't necessarily need the private key.
The way he was suggesting, you do. And chances are, other ways you would too. If it wasn't for the fakesigning bug on the Wii, you'd need the private key to sign pirated VC and WW games. There's no reason for this to be different.

A quick analogy for what you are saying:

Let's say he was suggesting to ride a bicycle to the top of a mountain. Your comment was essentially "you don't necessarily need a bicycle to get to the top of a mountain" - perhaps not, but you do need a bicycle if what you're trying to do is ride a bicycle to the top of a mountain.
