Xbox 360 hard drive with an Xbox transfer cable works perfectly. I just for formatted with the windows disk manager. If I run into any issues with with dios mios 2.9 I'll update this but as it stands it works with all the GameCube games I've tried. (Windwaker, Sonic Adventure 2/DX, Skies of Arcadia, Animal Crossing, Mario Sunshine, Melee)

Western Digital My Passport http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236196
I use a 1TB drive myself but when fixing up systems for friends they've used the 500GB versions
My Passport
WDBBEP0010BBL-NESN
USB powered
Stand-Alone HDD
2.5
Works with every Dios-Mios version I've thrown at it on the real NAND. Never messed with sneek/uneek though.
USB 2.0 / 3.0 Some older models are just 2.0 but most newer ones are 3.0

They're nice, compact drives that don't spindown in any tests I've run. Always worked great for me.

Works with DM 2.0 perfectly, and with everything else too.

FAT 32 formatted, Primary, Active
2.5'', external HDD, USB cable powered
Doesn't work with DM 2.0, it blackscreens immediately (not even the DM logo is shown, sigh...)
Works with Devolution, USBL GX (Wii retail, emunand for VC & Wiiware, Devo for GC), WiiMC and every homebrew i've ever thrown at it

Same type of drive as I have, but the 500 GB version, shiny black model. Very, very reliable, I like Western Digital's stuff.

I've already tried both the DML(2.10) and Dios-Mios (2.10) on USBLoader GX 3.0 and I've been playing Animal Crossing, Pikmin, and Pikmin 2 without any problem. My only wish is for the NMM to work. :)

note: My usb flash drive is partitioned into two different file system. The first one is Fat32 for gamecube games and the other one is NTFS for Wii games.

So why isn't anyone using or reporting on internal hdds/enclosures?

Why do people still use these 'external' hdds when an internal hdd in enclosure is such a better (and usually same cost) option???

Used a WD black FAEX 1TB in a Stardom iTank i310 enclosure for my white old Wii.. used same on my new black Wii before getting the white for GC.. - vc, ww, gc & wii games worked great.. pretty sure need to update my softmod/apps though by now, a year old..

Now using a WD blue 10EZEX drive in a Vantec Nexstar USB2/esata enclosure for my mate's old white Wii.. had Wii games work so far on this drive, still sorting out GC + ww/vc - will update once confirmed whether or not working for GC

As for SD cards, been using a 2GB verbatim SD, now my primary SD. Using a no-name old 1GB SD for my mate's Wii and just bought a 2GB sandisk Wii branded SD to replace the 1GB (was using this for my black wii modding, I have two wiis and now working on a mate's wii too). Never tried DML or SD loading of GC.

I ran all 3 Enclosures with these 2 drives
WD Caviar SE WD2500
Seagate Barracuda ES 400GB

Both with:
Fat32
32kb Cluster
Primary
Active

Both get BlackScreens when starting NGC games. only 20-30% of the times I start a NGC game it works.
