Pokémon Gold and Silver 3DS virtual console games to get boxed release in EU

IMG_3673.JPG

In the last Nintendo Direct, we were given the announcement that the GameBoy Color classics, Pokémon Gold and Silver would both be getting the virtual console treatment on the Nintendo 3DS. The games would also support Pokémon Bank, allowing for players to transport any creatures caught into the modern games. However, Nintendo of Europe had a curious Tweet today, showing off physical versions for these games. Stylized to look just like their original boxed release, both Gold and Silver will be sold on store shelves. As to the contents of the box itself, the only thing inside is a 3DS e-Shop download code and some stickers. This has only been announced for Europe at the time of writing, and doesn't appear to be scheduled for America.

Update: They're 9 pounds per game, one copy each limited per consumer.

'Physical' releases for digital content is a dumb idea. If you really must own a box for these games, invest in the actual gameboy games.

Semi related... I just discovered yesterday that my release-day purchase original Pokemon Silver carts battery has died, so I've lost one of the most epic save files ever
...checked my release-day Pokemon Blue cart and that's still got all of it's data - I guess the RTC feature must've taken it's toll on the 2nd gen games.
I've backed up my saves for the GBA carts I have, so I'll have to get a 'mega memory' or similar at some point to do the same for my GB/GBC carts.

There’s going to be a physical release in Japan, too.

huh ok, that's cool.
you get a magnet that looks like the cart, stickers, and a poster with the gen 2 pokemon on it.
if the 'west' gets that too, that's fine. if it's just an empty box with a code, lol - it's a bit too cheap. i'd be surprised if they stooped that low.

in Chary's post it says stickers... so no magnet or poster? that's sad.

They could have at least included the original Game Boy cartridges in the box, making it actually valuable.

Or at least a 3DS carts or some other guff (like Sonic Mania's statue).

Unless I'm mistaken it would be relatively simple to implement, possibly just redirecting the save location.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

    but that's a long shot

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM

  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm

i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds

It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space

@rqkaiju2, Physical media is a great source for archiving your data, none of that cloud storage shiz.
