I have been ripping some DVDs for my less technically adept brother, and have ripped the videos (well, only one so far) to VOB format, as it was gonna take to long to convert it to another format. I then install the K-Lite Codec Pack on my laptop, and attempted to play the VOB on my laptop to make sure that this method works before giving him the VOBs and installing K-Lite for him on his laptop. However, Windows Media Player still won't play VOB files. I can play them in Media Player Classic, but my brother is often reluctant to use free software from anyone other than Microsoft or Apple (iTunes and Safari). So I was wondering, to make things simpler for him, is there some way to get them to play within Windows Media Player? Perhaps I configured the codecs incorrectly or something? Any advice on what I may have done wrong? Or do you need to restart your computer for the new codecs to take effect or anything like that? Thanks for the help.

Seriously, you'll just need to convince him to use VLC. I've no idea why anyone is still using Media Player these days...

Are you sure? I am pretty sure I've seen people play .VOBs with Windows Media Player... :/

EDIT: Wow, just found the answer, its SO simple: Rename the files to .MPG. Makes them play in WMP

Seems quite stupid if you ask me, but there you go.

using vlc is your best option. i use it across multiple OS's for all my videos, and its so feature packed. plays just about whatever you can throw at it. however, i hate using vlc for music.

VLC sucks for music IMO, due to its complete lack of music organisation. But it is the best video player around, never had a valid video it couldn't play. But my brother has the impression that most free software that isn't preinstalled on a computer is illegal

Anyway, looks like I should be able to make it all work OK, so no worries.

vlc media player can play vob's and also vob's compressed in an iso, also just install ffdshow and divx codec, thats all you shoudl really need, if you really must use another app then cyberlink dvd players can play vobs too.

or what you could do is just burn the vobs to dvd and let him play it off the disc dunno if media player will read dvds, I dont use it

the whole point of ripping them is so he doesn't have to take discs. and like i said, i got them to play by renaming them. there seems to be an issue with the sound, but i'll tell him to fix it he can play the videos in VLC.

It is great for music and hell, most of my videos on my laptop work with it (although I still open them with VLC) as well DVDs are easy to play with it.

Ignoring my issues with klite (better in recent years granted) for a moment.

Issues with sound is usually because you are playing the straight vob file- load up the ifo file and things will be good again. Failing that you might not have speakers set up properly (5.1 audio going out over straight stereo rather than being downmixed).

Also for the record while VLC is awesome it usually gets creamed in the speed tests.

Personally I would just teach your brother how to use a computer- far less aggro in the long run.

vlc is the way to go , and the best part is , you can just right click the folder the movie is in and click open with vlc and it will begin playing , but if you wanna stream it to ur xbox your screwed

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
Karma177 @ Karma177: @The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really...
